<< How to read and understand sales

Last week was rather slow in terms of new releases. It saw the release of a new PreCure game, Fate/Kaleid Liner: Prisma Illya (now infamous for its low Famitsu score), and Imageepoch’s SoniPro. All three games sold below 7,000 copies at launch.

Also released last week was the Vita version of Child of Light, which sold close to 3,900 copies in its first week.

Of course, taking the #1 spot for another week in a row was Yo-kai Watch 2, which was just a few digits away from breaking the 2 million threshold.

The top-20 software sales chart for last week is as follows:

Oh okay Yoshi went up. Well then.

  • Raymond

I really have to play Yo-kai Watch now.

  • Solomon_Kano

About two weeks til YW2 doubles the original. I feel like I’m watching a hurricane sweeping up everything in its path.

    • Namuro

      Hissatsu! Youkai-Hareecaaaaaaane!!!

  • Jin Kisaragi

I really want to play Yo-kai Watch now. I’m intererested in seeing why this game is so popular.

    • AuraGuyChris

It’s Japanese folklore turned cute and exciting.

      • ishyg

        Not to mention having “collectibles”.

Japan has this thing with collectibles…that I often find being sold on flea markets afterwards.

  • Namuro
  • British_Otaku

I’ll have to find the time to pick up SoniPro later this year. Unfortunately, I probably won’t be fast enough to get the DLC costume for free (and will probably avoid paying them anything on that basis >_>), but it looks pretty good.

Where do we usually get the shipment numbers and percentages from?
I’m curious how much the top three new games expected to sell.

    • Zizal

      SoniPro : 40~60% , Precure : 20~40% , Prisma Illya : 40~60% .
      Source famitsu .

      • British_Otaku

So if PreCure doesn’t end up having legs, it isn’t even close to what they wanted out of their initial shipment and the other two might be okay, more so Prisma Illya since I expect the investment made into the project was pretty low.

        • PreCure is okay out of all of those though. It doesn’t need legs for a video game, because its merch is where it gets its standing. As for SoniPro, that is a problem and potentially for Prisma Illya (I would guess BD sales are where it’d be saved though).

Otherwise, they’ll just change their format for the PreCure games and maybe Illya just won’t get another game. Or they’ll try something different with it too.

          • British_Otaku

I’m not worried about the standing of the franchise, it doesn’t really matter if Mushibugyo’s 3DS game sold 5K first week (same week as MH4) and never charted again making .

PreCure (you said it yourself – 10 years of animation and merchandise) is fine from that angle of course. Same with Super Sonico as it is NitroPlus’s mascot with tons of merchandise. The Fate series isn’t at risk from a spinoff and given that the spinoff had two seasons, it is probably okay.

I’m thinking about whether the same publishers will keep the license and hire the same developers. If PreCure doesn’t sell out the first shipment (most games sell 50-75% (made up percent as I can’t find my source) in the first week), that implies that they expected and perhaps needed more sales. The other games aren’t in the complete clear of course, Prisma Illya has the fortune of an ongoing anime and that won’t last.

It is hard to tell how much was invested into the releases so I’m making a guess based on shipments.

          • Awww~. For PreCure, I think nothing will change (because it’s mostly been the same way for years and has a pattern), but for SoniPro and Illya, especially SoniPro, I kind of wonder.

          • British_Otaku

I would think that PS3 and 3DS games can’t be that cheap, but I’m sticking to the sell through rate for the games as a sign that they did well enough. A 3DS exclusive idol management game doesn’t cost much to develop (this sold 6K, 40-60% sold) and neither does a remake of a PC visual novel (Motto SoniComi sold 10K according to Famitsu during the anime’s run first week, 60-80% sold).

Nothing will change for PreCure for sure though.

  • MaximDualBlade

Freedom Wars hanging in there. I’m pleased.

YOukai Watch is raging hard! 2 mill next week

  • 3PointDecoupage
  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

Yokai Watch 2 is a phenomenon in it’s own way.

  • Okane shoukan. Money money money. It’s a youkai world.

  • otakumike

I can’t read the words, I went to the numbers and my eyes welled up with tears. So sad…

  • PotatoPower

how the hell did precure beat both sonipro and ilya

    • Kouji Tamino

Because one’s based off a long running popular magical girl series and the other two are more niche and otaku geared.

    • Renaldi Saputra

Remember that precure is big in japan in terms of target audience too

    • darke

I’m more “how the hell did it sell that low?”. PreCure is a huge franchise outside of games, the bad reviews must have really hit it.

    • . . .You’re amazed at that? Have you seen how much it brings in? It was amongst the top five selling brands for a long time (I think Aikatsu! toppled its spot as third though?).

      • PotatoPower

i wont deny its popularity, but i never thought people cared about their games

        • The games used to perform a bit better, but I think how minimal they’ve become and the quality has started to hurt them.

  • AuraGuyChris

2 million units and some more before it defeats Pokemon.

    • Raymond

at the rate it’s going, it wont take long. O_O

  • Those PreCure numbers are low, but I wonder if it’s because of the game. . . or because other merch from the series is doing better? Hmm.

    • Shippoyasha

Maybe it’s because people aren’t used to a very well made Precure game. It seems to be selling pretty decently for what it is though.

      • Renaldi Saputra

Anw precure isn’t major at the game marketing, it’s more into toys & accessories

    • Destiny13777

Bandai released numbers for Happiness Charge’s first quarter sales today I believe and there down from Doki Doki and the ratings have been reaching a big time low lately. It’s kind of sad since I am enjoying the season.

      • That’s not too surprising. I can’t follow it myself really (just don’t feel the drive) but I appreciate it way more than I do Doki Doki. I think being too close to Aikatsu! in some of its ideas and presentation probably hurts it too. If little girls are going to be using cards to transform and collect outfits, why not go for the more cute and extravagant ones?

Even though they both fill different audiences in terms of genre under magical girl/shoujo and for the purpose of the cards, it’s still way too close.

  • KuroNathan

huh, oreshika is already almost at 120k Color me surprised.

  • Göran Isacson

Yoshi’s New Island clings on, but what I’m most interested in is Corpse Party- is there any data to say that these 17K sold games are a good thing, a bad thing or business as usual?

  • DyLaN

…………I’m not sure who the 3 Precures aside frm Cure Honey is. I can’t tell if they are OCs or past Precures! D:

    • They’re from last season, Doki Doki.

It has its moments, but definitely became one of the weakest seasons period.

      • zzzSleeping

I am a long time precure fan and i dropped Doki doki it was that bad.

        • Renaldi Saputra

It’s indeed the lowest precure series by the fans

          • zzzSleeping

I seen people saying it’s great and calling smile the worst season( a season which i enjoyed despite it’s flaws).

          • Smile was cute and had some cool ideas, but the writing was sometimes weak to me, but I can’t stand the head writer and the work he does on KR or anything else.

          • zzzSleeping

Well as i said it had flaws but the stuff it did well like the gimmicks and comedy kept it enjoyable for me ( kid precures has to be the cutest thing on the franshise)

          • The comedy was definitely there~. I also like that they were willing to do some especially zany stuff, even for a PreCure show lol. (And I agree!)

        • Shippoyasha

Hmm. I still rather liked it. It has a Batman Butler and all. One of the most overpowering yellows in a Precure so far as well.

        • Yeah, same here. Initially, I actually dropped it by chance/accident, but when I heard how it was going, I didn’t bother to pick it up again.

I was hopeful about it too, because I didn’t care for Smile and now I don’t know how I feel about these Anniversary+post titles.

          • zzzSleeping

Ya i read about pretty much all the key stuff that happened also watched last episode for the lulz it was cringeworthy.

          • Oh man, I heard how bad it was! The movie didn’t help either, right? Yeah, I think I’ll just leave Doki Doki alone period lol. x’D

          • zzzSleeping

Nah breh i couldn’t touch the movie with a ten foot pole. Speaking of movies NS3 was so bad. Like new level of low.

          • Lolol x’D

Oh man, I hear the best part about NS3 is that Mana let someone else get the final blow. x’DD

      • DyLaN

Oh, I didn’t follow it to the end cuz I can’t keep up with the episodes XD

        • Haha, that’s understandable. From what I understand, Doki Doki unfortunately became a mess.

  • idrawrobots

Mario Kart 8, you slow burner you!

  • M’iau M’iaut

Gawd there’s a cold wind a blowin. When 5k sales is enough to make JPN top 10, somethings gotta change. And the US numbers show no sign of helpin.

  • s07195

So do games that become slow burners become so from the guarantee of quality? Youkai Watch and Mario Kart 8 kinda proves it, I think.

In other news Youkai Watch 1 is pretty much sold out in Hong Kong… -.-

    • It’s a few things:

      1. Guarantee of quality
      2. Constant promotion/marketing
      3. Word of mouth
      4. An installbase large enough to support the game in question

      • s07195

So I’m guessing Youkai Watch 2 fits all four conditions, but is the Wii U install base large enough that Mario Kart remains on the chart on a weekly basis, or is Mario Kart making the install base larger by that amount every week? Or is this week just bad in sales overall?

        • Sorry, I didn’t see this until just now. Disqus doesn’t send me notifications for some odd reason.

Yeah, I would say Yo-kai Watch definitely fits all four categories. It’s a good game with high production values, the anime was aired at the right time (while the game was still growing through word of mouth), and the 3DS has an installbase of 15 million, which is more than enough to support a game of this scope.

but is the Wii U install base large enough that Mario Kart remains on the chart on a weekly basis

I think Mario Kart is charting partly because everything else isn’t really very popular. I mean, look at all the recent releases… none of them have really taken off in a big way or seen word of mouth catch on. So popular games like Mario Kart that have constant word of mouth and/or promotion will always come back every now and again, when everything else drops.

  • I had to see this infamous low score Prisma Illya got; turns out it was 18/40. That’s nasty.

  • MK

Yo-kai Watch is planned for western release next year.
