Super Smash Bros. For 3DS Sells 1 Million In Its First Week

By Ishaan . September 15, 2014 . 11:32pm

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has sold over 1 million copies in Japan, Nintendo announced today. The game was released this past Saturday (September 13th) and achieved that figure in its first week, including download sales.

Additionally, Nintendo said that retail shipments for the game crossed the 1 million mark at the end of last week as well.

Super Smash Bros. is the latest to join the ranks of other games that have sold 1 million copies on the Nintendo 3DS in their first week. These other titles include Monster Hunter 4, Pokémon X/Y and Yo-Kai Watch 2: Head/Founder.

Note: Nintendo’s sales figures for Smash sourced from Media Create.

I must say, I’m loving everything about it. Except unlocking custom moves. This…this is tedious as hell.

    • Linhua

… what are they making you do…?

      • Asthon

For the fastest way to unlock custom moves, spam classic mode on harder difficulties and hope your reaction times good on roulette to land on the custom move slot.

        • Linhua

… wow that’s… that’s an awful thing to do .-.

          • 하세요

On top of that, you can get the same one over again, like trophies. Even then, the wrench can mean a stat customization tool or something for you Mii, so it’s a 1/3rd chance to even get a custom move to begin with, let alone repeats.

This was just a horrible decision, and I’m not even into the whole custom move thing. It’s fun on the side, but I like my defaults.

          • Linhua

… are these custom moves ONLY for Mii characters, or are they for the actual cast of characters as well…?

        • British_Otaku

That’s how it goes? Yeah, that isn’t particularly good.
Shame as this game has removed a lot of random factors, but an unlock system is ruled by them.

    • HarakiriKami

do something else in smash then

  • DeAndre Atchison

Gonna be like 10 in like 3 weeks

    • Oniros

And 10.1 once the Wii U version hits

      • HarakiriKami

Nah it’d already have outsold brawl by then so 13 million sold

  • Tonton Ramos

Now I’m worried about the WiiU version…

    • Salvador Sandoval

Why? More people playing smash means more people are likely to get try the Wii U version for the “Better experience”. More people trying the Wii U version means more people buying it.

      • Suicunesol

Or they might be satisfied by the 3DS version.

        • Highasthesky

Honestly i see that being the case, a lot of people were impressed by the 3DS graphics and how it handled after having the game in their hands. Unless graphics really mean that much to you i see no reason to buy the Wii U version. That’s just my opinion though.

          • Aisha Lee

When you factor in things like grounded internet connection and people who play smash on at tournament level. I think the Wii U version will do just fine. Heck might even boost sales.

          • Highasthesky

I’m not saying it won’t, i just don’t see casuals or people who don’t own a Wii U buying one just for this game.

          • Aisha Lee

I could see casuals getting a Wii U for this game just smack pal around with friends and talk smack to one another just like the Brawl days and with the Wii U version coming out during the holiday season. There a good chance that the Wii U can get the push it needs.

          • Highasthesky

I would like that, i don’t see it, but i’d like for that to happen.

          • HarakiriKami

Why would people buy a 3DS for smash?

          • Princess_Eevee9

I believe you haven’t seen the hordes of people waiting for a release date for the Wii U version before dropping money for one. Smash is a system selling no doubt about that and it’s coming out during America’s holiday season? The question should be will you be able to find a copy of you don’t preorder now.

          • Namuro

Also, there maybe those whose 3DS just couldn’t handle their mad skillz, and they have to get the Wii U version instead. LOL

            http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s–8RNjOugk–/vukadajhhrzmz2hn7d8k.jpg

          • Highasthesky

            Wow. Poor bastard. :(

          • John Diamond

tbh i hear that the wii-u version will have harder challenges and wii-u exclusive game modes.

            unless my memory fails me

          • Highasthesky

That’s more like it, i expected the Wii U version to have more modes. That’s good to hear.

          • John Diamond

oh yeah, but smash run won’t be on Wii-u

          • Jero

            The controls and the scene.

    • Manny Being Manny

3DS was always going to wreck the Wii U versions sales simply because there are far more 3DS owners out there.

      • MXC

And far more reasons. Are there even any kind of limited editions for Wii U?

    • Hound

Mario Kart 8 did just fine not too long after 7. It helped sell a lot of WiiUs as well.

    • Princess_Eevee9

Don’t be. Many 3DS owners gonna buy the Wii U version of they own one. And when that Smash bundle releases during the holidays units are gonna fly off the shelves.

  • mojack411

I’m glad to have contributed to this number.

  • Shippoyasha

When the original Smash was announced, it was this quaint little project people thought might be a cute little curiosity at best.

And now, it’s arguably the flagship Nintendo franchise. Pretty wild.

    • HarakiriKami

Isnt Smash still the highest selling fighting game franchise out there?

It’s amazing what Sakurai and Iwata created during their tenure as developers

      • Thatguy

It’s amazing what Sakurai and Iwata created during their drunk party.

        Here, fixed for you ;)

    • NeptuniasBeard

I remember I was about 7-8 years old when I first saw that commercial of people in weird mascot costumes beating each other up and thought it was the funniest thing in the world, I begged my mom to get it just for that. 15 years later and I’ve somehow have gotten even giddier about these games

      • Shippoyasha

Yeah, the commercial reflected how Nintendo knew what a left field idea it was. I got into the game when kids were swapping it around on visits. Even a lot of players treated it as a silly party game back then. It is surreal how people are playing it more seriously these days.

  • Salvador Sandoval

I’m expecting “It prints money” GIFs, i wonder if Pokemon ORAS have the power to sell 1 million in a week too.

    • Black Heaven

I was almost tempted to put the GIF… then I remembered, this is Siliconera. >_<
(They delete gif comments if I recall correctly)

You can put your trust on Pokemon. I don't think it ever had bad sales, but I can't exactly be sure about 1 million in a week.

    • http://people.ign.com/princerevolver Surgeon Of Death

      One million a piece.

    • Princess_Eevee9

      It is Pokémon and Hoenn.

  • ishyg

Pretty interesting how the Wii U version will hold up, at least in Japan.

  • AndyMAX

Good for Nintendo, but after i saw all those broken 3DS due to this version i will just wait for the WiiU.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Broken 3DS(s)? What do you mean~?

      • Princess_Eevee9

People are breaking their Circle Pads.

        • Kaijumaster

Correction. Kotaku is running thier daily anti-Nintendo articles about the massive rash of millions of broken 3DS. 8p

          • Princess_Eevee9

I saw a picture was it doctored? O.o

          • Kaijumaster

No some 3ds have broke. There are pictures of about 10 or so. But in Gawker thinking 10 reported nintendo products breaking equals a 98% failure rate which must be aggressively reported!

          • Princess_Eevee9

            Wow.

          • MaidKillua

People still visit Kotaku??? That’s the real headline here. I’m utterly shocked. lol

    • Jero

I’ve seen people broke their 3ds with animal crossing, I broke my L button with kid icarus and I just played 300 hours. I have a friend who played well over a 1000 and his 3ds is in top shape.

  • Namuro

Nice! Glad to see it doing well. Can’t wait to see the global sale number.

As for me, I’m not buying it just yet. I’m waiting to see if the EU version has a Japanese voice option or not. Otherwise, I’ll just download the JP one.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

I’m done. Even smash bro of all games are victim of animu voice beggars

      • AkuLord3

yes oppose to the english animu beggars…geez chill out its just voices…anime, cartoons or whatever…people like how certain VAs.

      • Namuro

Wow, chill out man. Just because one person (me) prefers to play a Japanese game with Japanese voices, you’re going to condemn all the anime fans out there?

Besides, I’m not begging here, since I have the option to get either version.

Anyway, is it really such a crime to like Japanese voice acting? If people were bashing English voice acting over Japanese one (especially for no good reasons), then I can understand why people would be angry.

I get that a lot of people prefer English voices, because they sound “familiar” to them, and that they can actually “understand” what’s being said. Well, that’s the same case for me. I grew up watching anime in Japanese only (I watched a few in English dub during the time I was studying in England, and I totally love some of them in dub like Cowboy Bebop and Excel Saga). So I’m “used” to the Japanese voices. Therefore, given the choices, I’ll always pick Japanese over English, because that’s my preference. THAT IS ALL.

Be a little more open-minded, will you?

        • Jero

You can put the Japanese version in German or English so my guess is that you can do the same in the English version, I don’t know if that changes the characters voice too or it’s just the menus and announcer.

          • Namuro

You can really change all the texts in the Japanese version into English?

I’ve been looking around on the net, and so far, everyone says that there’s no language option in the Japanese version.

          • Jero

Well yesterday i was searching for some videos of palutena and there was this German guy playing classic mode in German so… I guess you can. Unless he got an early copy of the EU game.

          • Namuro

            Hmm… I see.

          • British_Otaku

Really? I haven’t dug through all of the options, but having multiple languages outside of the credits being in English…?

          • Namuro

If you find anything about the language option, can you let me know as well?

            Cheers!

          • British_Otaku

Yeah, I went back into the menus and can’t see an option like that.

            Button Inputs.
            Sound (BGM, Voice, Effects).
            Character Outline.
Damage Presentation. (Bottom screen, but 3 places)
            Internet Options. (Profile and taunts)

Could it be hiding somewhere else, maybe Jero knows, but it looks like it will be Japanese text only (not that Smash Bros is hard to navigate whether you know as much/little as me or you or nothing at all) and quite likely it won’t have dual audio for any region.

          • Namuro

            I see… Thanks a lot!

    • British_Otaku

So that’s why you are still playing the demo… I was wondering because Haseyo jumped on it immediately and I did as soon I noticed “It’s OUT!?”…

I don’t have a strong opinion on the voices, but something about Shulk (maybe I’m unused to hearing a Brit leading a video game) repels me. I’ll play Xenoblade eventually.

      • Kaijumaster

You should get on that. The English actors are all brilliant. Heck the voice of Melia went on the be the current Doctor Who companion

        • British_Otaku

Not much of a Doctor Who fan, but nice trivia to know and I’ll find the time for it, The Last Story (which I own, both Japanese and English) and Pandora’s Tower.

          • Kaijumaster

Pandora didn’t really grab me. But Last story is pretty darn good, though Xenoblade blows em both away (just more random immpressions)

      • r4ind4nce

Everyone in Xenoblade’s localisation is utterly British. Be prepared. I loved it, but I’m not exactly fond of American accents which could be why it was so refreshing for me, since most JRPGs get decidedly American dubs when localised.

        • British_Otaku

I’m not 100% sure about hearing blokes and lasses which sound “normal” in my video games, but I guess that is what you tend to get in all of your games. :P

          • triablos

I thought the whole hatred of dubbed voices was that they sound so unrealistic.

          • British_Otaku

Depends on what we expect from our “realistic” voices… I want the characters to match the voices and script they are given and haven’t gotten the chance to hear British voices in media unless it is live action pretty much.

Even if it is another potential take, it feels strange to hear something “familiar” unless the setting really matches it and perhaps it works for The Last Story… maybe but with Xenoblade I’m not sure yet. Whatever, dual audio is available for that game anyway.

          • triablos

I haven’t played Xenoblade yet so I can’t judge the voice acting. Its something I’m not used to (since basically 99% of all dubs are American) but I’m not too focused on voice acting unless its REALLY bad.

The whole voice fitting thing makes sense though, since most sub “obsessors” tend to hear Japanese voices first, get used to it, and then when they hear dub it sounds weird or “freaking terrible I hate this crap”. Like your friend suddenly changing voices I guess.

      • Namuro

I’m not really in that much of a hurry to play the game, because I’m not that “crazy” about the Smash Bros. series, unlike Monster Hunter or Touhou. LOL

Anyway, seeing that the English version is coming out soon, I thought that I might as well just wait a little longer and see if it will have Japanese voice option, in which if it does, then that will be perfect for a Japanophile (who has yet to master the language) like me.

I’d love to play it right now, though! I’m having a lot of fun with the demo, so the full game should be a real blast!

Welp, I’ll be playing with you guys soon enough!

    • Princess_Eevee9

I get more options is always better but seriously…

      • Namuro

        Well, I’m a Japanophile.

        • Princess_Eevee9

That’s good for you I guess.

          • Namuro

            Yes, it is! \( ゜∀゜)/

  • Princess_Eevee9

MetaKnight looking good in that pic.

  • http://forums.wpcentral.com/members/wanderingtraveler.htm TheWPCTraveler

Alright, they should start the pre-orders for OR/AS and SSB for Wii U soon.
    More million-sellers!

    • Princess_Eevee9

They’ve been open for months now. :)

      • http://forums.wpcentral.com/members/wanderingtraveler.htm TheWPCTraveler

Crap, didn’t notice them on the charts. Okay, well, SSB for Wii U is up there, but where is OR/AS?

        • Princess_Eevee9

Depends on where you go. I get mine from Gamestop.

  • British_Otaku

Did better than I expected… I know Brawl did similar numbers in Japan first week, but a few other series on the 3DS gave me the impression it would sell a few hundred thousand instead.

  • James Enk

the guys behind the game deserve the success i think, so good job. now i am really curious how well the WiiU version will do, worldwide but i am more curious if the game will convince Japanese gamers to buy the WiiU

    • Princess_Eevee9

Hmmm the team has got their work cut out for them. Truly I think it depends on how much we buy. Might convince Japan to invest time into it.

      • James Enk

you mean if the west buys the console it will convince Japan to buy also?

        • Princess_Eevee9

          It’s really weird but yeah.

  • DudeJericho

Not surprised, I’ve been watching hours of gameplay thanks to Maximillian and I got to say it looks fantastic. Megaman doesn’t seem to be as strong as I’d hoped for but like Max mentioned that’s probably because everyone would just choose him. I’m hoping that they’ll improve the online aspect before they bring it over since that seems to have some issues over there but I’m glad it did well in Japan.

    • British_Otaku

I haven’t watched Maximilian playing the game, but after a lot of practice with Megaman he seems pretty strong though I haven’t played with or unlocked everyone.

      • DudeJericho

It seems his moves have a lot of frames to them so it leaves him very vulnerable to attacks and he also lacks range, but of course I’m saying all this based on what I’ve seen and heard alone.

        • British_Otaku

It does appear that way (the frames), but I make a lot of use of his A and Side A (which is the abillity to walk while shooting lemons). You can deny projectiles like Link’s arrows, throw Metal Blades through tons of stuff (B) or set bomb (Side B).

He isn’t my main but I rarely get into close quarters for the frames to be an issue and if I do both the up and down smashes are safe to use and don’t involve any projectiles which can be used on you.

He has some of the better range (not with melee of course) in the game when you dig into his library. That forward smash can be countered by like half the roster at this point but it is the only forward smash which has that kind of reach.

          • DudeJericho

Interesting, yeah I’m definitely going to go with him for a while, just to see how far I could bring his true ability out, just going to require alot of time I suppose.

        • NintendoPSXTheSecond

          Lack’s range? He’s ALL range!

          • DudeJericho

His blaster even when fully charged barely reaches half the screen, but I know the metal blade, crash bomber and leaf shield can go full screen (at least I think all of them do), but they all have weaknesses which prevent you from frequently using them.

          • British_Otaku

Of course, so you don’t use them frequently and focus on wearing an enemy down till they don’t see them coming.

A lot of things have weaknesses or aren’t safe. I played an extended session with Megaman in Training and messed around with the speed option. I got a feel for what worked and what didn’t as I went from holding the 1/4 to normal speed.

Walk and shoot, punish with B projectiles, almost never use Leaf Shield (I haven’t found a real use for it) and so on.

If you use other characters, you’ll see that they have distinct weaknesses as well.

          • DudeJericho

Does Megaman do well close range though? So far I’m getting the impression he’s more suited to a hit and run play style.

          • British_Otaku

Not really, you can think of him as the other side of the coin or Snake but with more focus on setup and less godly hand to hand skills…

Ideally, you will be wearing people down or throwing off their pace so you can get a safe Smash or Shoryuken. I don’t think it is much of a problem that he can’t get in too close and brawl like Little Mac (who can’t do anything in the air but counter, KO punch when he has the meter or flail about).

He has the strength of having the same range whether he is standing, walking forward or jumping.

Hit and run is sort of his thing, but he can hurt and still do well.

          • DudeJericho

            Thanks for explaining dude ^^

    • Adam Sheridan

I got the demo and Megaman is super fun to play with. I’ve put the most time into him throughout my demo experience so far. I think the way he dies in megaman style and makes the sound effect is very funny.

  • Göran Isacson

Dangarang. Those are some good sales right there… though I do wonder what will happen in the West. I don’t doubt 3DS version will sell like gangbusters too, but prrrobably more than the WiiU version just because more people own it, but I wonder if it will be a bit more “even” over here than it’ll be over there due to home consoles being a bigger thing here.

Of course, I speculate on this without having any idea what the WiiU version will sell like in Japan, but I’ma speculate that it won’t be a million copies within the first week.

    • Strawberry Starlet

Maybe Amiibo will boost some Wii U holiday sales? (Since the peripheral for 3DS won’t be available immediately). But I’m really not sure how attractive Amiibo is gonna be for kids when they have Skylanders and Disney Infinity as options. Come to think of it, given the fairly technical things Amiibo has been said to do, i wonder who the target market really is for that. I assumed kids, but now I’m second guessing myself.

      • Miss_Madness

I would say all sort of demograhics. For one kids get a skylander like toy to mess around with technical or not it would be interesting for them. Fans of Nintendo characters can get some good figures at low prices. Scalpers get a new thing to scam with. I’m not sure but it could also help the smash com too.

  • Adam Sheridan

Lets see if Smash Bros manages to shift some more Wii U consoles.

I think strategically Nintendo needs to schedule key game launches in short succession to keep interest high, right? I mean if say as of January they had a new major game every two-three months for the year, do you think that would make a difference to Wii U interest?

    • James Enk

that sounds like a good plan to me but i have no idea how this things work:)

    • triablos

I doubt it will make too much of a difference considering MK8 didn’t and its a more popular game.

      • Slayven19

MK8 also isn’t as hype as smash bros, mk games always sell over time but smash from what I’ve seen has always been a bigger system seller.

        • triablos

Well, hype is just hype. Mario Kart pretty much always outsells Smash Bros though. One pretty important factor is the 3ds release. That already means there are going to be less buyers of the Wii U version in Japan, and a few in the west (like me, yay!)

      • Adam Sheridan

We’ll have to see, Smash has a die hard fanbase and some of those may be waiting just for the game to come out before buying the console. I personally know people who only picked up a Wii for Brawl.

    • Codename: D.A.V.I.D.

Probably useful to keep the momentum, a key release in Golden Week would be a good thing for its sales in Japan, I wonder how will they arrange their releases schedule…

      • Adam Sheridan

I mean the main concern I see with the Wii U is the distance between releases. Sony has been bringing out games in the interim and both consoles have been getting a lot of third party stuff also on the new consoles while the Wii U is floundering.

I’ll never be at a loss to buy games for the new consoles unless I picked up one every couple weeks for the next while, that’s not even counting digital games. Not saying they’re all amazing or anything, but they’re certainly there and more are coming.

  • Guest

    …It hasn’t been a week, though…

    • NeptuniasBeard

Some got it days earlier . Maybe they count that?

    • Adam Sheridan

Right but it’s still in its first week. So they’ve sold a million within their first week of sales.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Good stuff. And knowing Nintendo, this likely means they’ve already made back their money for the game. Major success before even leaving Japan

    • Kevin Lima Ferreira

      Excellent [2]

  • SetzerGabbiani

0__0 … I knew Smash was popular, but the 3DS just turned it up 10 notches. They probably made back all dev. costs for both versions already, lol!

    • James Robert Thompson

Doubt it, especially considering the licencing of third party characters.

      • Slayven19

That probably didn’t cost them much of anything, for pac-man and sonic I’m sure it didn’t cost them anything. Capcom of course probably wanted that dough but even I can’t see them charging them that much for megaman.

        • http://www.ihasnowebsitez.com Satonaka CP-Four

Capcom always wants the dough though XD

  • raygunner659

I’m also wondering how many people got a 3DS for this game, haha. Can’t wait!

    • James Robert Thompson

More importantly how many people got a replacement 3DS for this because they already broke the circle pad?

      • Daniel

        Nintendos true plan is revealed!

  • Ric Vazquez

It prints money! It will probably sell more than MH4.

  • triablos

Guys remember that you’re responsible for your own circle pads!

This was obvious, you take the one of the most popular franchises of all time and put it on the best selling handheld right now and you got instant sales. Wonder how this is going to affect the Wii U version though, curious…

I think the most popular franchise of Nintendo is pokemon, I like smash better tho :P.

My circle pad rubber came off yesterday while walking in bravely default. It is clear that the rubbers coming off of the of 3ds systems is no fault of smash I guess lol.

It came off for me for the first time while playing Smash Bros (three occasions, one was on the train and one was an online match but I won still >_>) but it has been loose for a while from over 1000 hours besides it being second hand.

While I can see it coming off while playing other games, out of the whole 3DS library that I have Smash Bros is definitely the most demanding of the circle pad as attacks and spacing are so flexible and depend exclusively on it.

About that: mine came off some weeks ago while playing Senran Kagura Burst (which does not demand that much analog movement) and my brother’s also did some days later.
I think the main cause is likely to be related to the age of the glue used to keep the part on, as ours were near launch units and were never treated badly. Hell, my brother harldy touches his.
Of course, Smash is obviously making it easier to occur haha

    Meanwhile, I’m playing Playstation ASBR on Vita… ;_;

  • Snorlaxation

    Huzzah! Hooray!

  • Vash bane

wow didn’t think the hype was that real…and speaking from a none competitive side I wonder how many bought it just to fight there friends.
(I know if I was to buy this…any fighter for that matter I stay FAR away from online)
