Last week in Japan, sales started getting much more interesting compared to the relatively quiet week of no new releases from the week prior. Media Create provides us with sales data of video game hardware and software for the week of January 11 through January 17, 2016.

The first thing that stands out right away after a quick glance at the top-20 sales chart is how different the placements are for this week. While things looked almost identical in placement for the previous two weeks, this week doesn’t have a single title that was in the same place last week.

Strange as it may seem, Monster Hunter X isn’t in the top place for the first time in weeks since Monster Strike released, and it’s not even in #2. What is this sorcery? To answer the question—Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, which released in Japan on January 14, 2016.

Atlus’ port/HD remake of the PS2 classic action RPG appears to have sold quite well in its debut week, having sold 43,394 units on PlayStation Vita, 42,263 units on PlayStation 4, and 9,771 units on PlayStation 3 for a total of 95,428 copies across all three platforms.

For those of you wondering, the original Odin Sphere released in Japan in May of 2007, and it saw 59,248 copies sold in its first week. Atlus hit a bump on the road with Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem to close off 2015, but they’re already seeing a pretty strong start of 2016 thanks to the return of Odin Sphere, and they still have Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final releasing three weeks from today.

If you’re wondering about Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours published by Kadokawa on the bottom of the list at 3,675 copies sold in its first week, but that’s nothing too new for a shmup, as they generally tend to sell to a much smaller audience. The game released last month in the west on PC and late-November for PS4 and Vita.

We should also mention that Cardfight!! Vanguard G: Stride to Victory!! is one of the more surprising new entries in the list, with a #4 position in the top-20 of the week, after having sold 20,992 units to top Monster Strike. It may not be as successful as the previous title in Lock On Victory!! which sold 33,380 copies when it released in 2014, but for a non-major title from FuRyu to crack the 20k mark during a time of low sales, it’s still impressive, nonetheless.

The top-20 software sales chart for last week is as follows:
