Capcom To Slow Down On Digital Re-Releases Of Fighting Games

Capcom have been releasing updated versions of their older fighting games on current consoles with added features such as online play and various visual upgrades in recent years. Games that have been re-released in this manner include: Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, Marvel vs. Capcom Origins, Darkstalkers Resurrection, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

According to Capcom USA Senior VP Christian Svensson, there may not be many more Capcom fighters that are feasible for the re-release treatment.

On the Capcom forums, Svensson provides answers to fans asking about the company’s digital re-releases, and explains the various hurdles that need to be overcome before a game can be re-released at all. He then goes on to mention updated versions of older games.

“New development in the form of updated versions of SF2, SF3, MvC2, MvC1, Marvel Super HeroesDarkstalkers, Puzzle Fighter etc. Sadly, I think we’ve probably run the course of feasible titles here given the droppoff we’ve seen in sales with each new introduction,” Svensson writes.

He continues: “It seems the novelty of such projects is wearing off even within just the fighting game community based upon the sales data of our last two launches. That said, we have been quite prolific in these areas (despite the assertion above that we haven’t) and it’s probably time for us to slow down anyway.”
