Back when Playtonic first ran its Yooka-Laylee Kickstarter, one of the stretch goals the campaign met was a shader that would make the game look more like a Nintendo 64 title. In July 2018, the developer said it was working on the feature. Now, the latest PlayTonic update has confirmed the Yooka-Laylee 64-bit feature is in quality assurance testing and will be released soon. It also has a new trailer.
In the update, PlayTonic noted the Yooka-Laylee 64-bit feature will be a free update for everyone. However, it says that it will have a staggered release when it comes out in the next few weeks or so. This is because the approval process for having new content applied to games has different time periods on different platforms.
Here is the official Yooka-Laylee 64-bit teaser. It begins with the duo talking to a Vendi and selecting 64-bit from the available options. Once the box is checked, scanlines are added, a lot of the lighting and shader effects are cut back, and the game’s frame rate drops. The game also gets a bit of a frame around it, to make it look as though it is being played on a CRT TV.
Yooka-Laylee is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The free update that will bring the 64-bit option will arrive soon.
