Shonen Jump, Weekly Young Jump, Margaret, and Ribon publisher Shueisha kicked off a Manga Plus survey about its manga series that seems to be gauging if readers would accept AI translations for its series. An official site is open and taking responses in Brazilian Portuguese, English, French, Indonesian, and Spanish. This will run until September 27, 2026 JST, which means in some regions it will end on September 26, 2026. However, the company did mention it may end it sooner than planned. This survey didn’t mention if this is something that could be considered for series like One Piece or Spy x Family,
The questions about AI manga translations for Shueisha Manga Plus series come up on the eighth page of the survey after more general questions about interest in things like Shonen Jump or shojo releases. The first question is, “What is your opinion on AI translation?” Someone can choose responses ranging from “very positive” to “very negative.”
This is followed by a question that reads, “What concerns, if any, do you have about AI-assisted manga manga translations?” People can tick as many boxes as they’d like for this one, with eight options available, as well as select “other” to provide direct feedback. The responses for concerns for this section are, “lower overall quality,” “loss of respect for readers,” “loss of respect for creators,” “character personalities changing,” “cultural references being mistranslated,” “less work for human translators,” “ethical concerns,” and “legal concerns.”
Manga Plus is primarily known as being a Shueisha hub for Shonen Jump shonen manga releases and at the moment is known for translations in languages like English, French, German, Indonesian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Some of its top series, as of time of writing, are One Piece, Dandadan, Spy x Family, Sakamoto Days, Kagurabachi, Hunter x Hunter, Ichi the Witch, Hitoner, Ruri Dragon, and Marriagetoxin.
