This morning, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony announced “PlayStation Now,” a streaming service for games on PlayStation platforms.

Using Gaikai’s streaming technology, PlayStation Now will allow PSOne, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 games to be streamed over the Internet to a variety of devices including most 2014 Bravia model televisions, tablets, smartphones, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

At first, the service will only be available for PS3 and PS4. Eventually, Sony will add support for PlayStation Vita and then for non-Sony devices.

PlayStation Now will allow one to pay for streamed games in two ways—either via a subscription fee or by renting games on an individual basis. Games mentioned as examples of PS3 streaming included The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls.

PlayStation Now is scheduled to go live this summer, with a closed beta planned for later this month. We’ll have more on the service as further details are shared.
