Tekken Won’t Be Left Out Of EVO 2014 After All

For a while, it looked like the 2014 Evo Championships weren’t going to host any 3D fighting game tournaments. EVO’s line-up this year consisted entirely of 2D fighters, with no trace of Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive… or even Tekken.

Instead, EVO 2014’s line-up consisted of Ultra Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Killer Instinct, King of Fighters XIII and BlazBlue. A short while after the first six, Super Smash Bros. Melee was added to the list as well.

Luckily, Namco Bandai and controller manufacturer MadCatz appear to have stepped in to do something about the situation. Shoryuken reports that during a special presentation of iPlayWiner’s “The Fray!”, EVO co-founder Joey Cuellar came onto the program to make a special announcement—that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was being added to the list of games.

Additionally, Namco Bandai themselves are going to be joining EVO as one of the event’s main sponsors this year. MadCatz founder Mark Julio is said to have played a role in this change of plans. Prior to Tekken Tag Tournament 2 being added to the official EVO line-up, Julio had also expressed interest in hosting an unofficial Tekken tournament at the MadCatz booth at EVO this year.

EVO 2014 will be held from July 11th – 13th at the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.
