Sonic On Consoles Isn’t Doing Great, But Sonic On Smartphones Is Still Going Fast

Recommended Videos

Sega’s tight relationship with smartphones just got tighter—the company’s Sonic Dash runner has been downloaded over 100 million times across iOS, Android, and Windows Phone devices.

Sonic Dash was originally released in March 2013, which means it’s taken Sega two years to get to this point. During that time, Sonic Dash has seen nearly 10 in-game events, and players have collectively amassed 850 billion gold rings in the game across 120 million hours of playtime.

In comparison, Sega’s latest console Sonic game, Sonic Boom, sold just 620,000 units across Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and was heavily criticized for being a buggy mess. For all the things Sega are doing right on the mobile front with Sonic, it’s clear the same isn’t happening on consoles.

Here’s the best part, though: Sonic Dash was developed using a team of 15 people, and took just eight months to complete—far less of an investment than your average AAA console game.
