Niantic CEO Addresses Pokémon GO Hacking Attempts, Feedback On The App’s “Nearby” Feature

Niantic CEO John Hanke has posted a message on the company’s website detailing recent developments regarding Pokémon GO.

First off, Hanke described the hectic atmosphere surrounding the company since Pokémon GO’s launch, but that they draw inspiration and motivations from positive reactions to the game. He then went on to explain why there was a delay in getting the app available in Latin America, citing “aggressive efforts by third parties to access our servers outside of the Pokémon GO game client and our terms of service.”

On a similar note, Hanke also openly addressed the issue of hackers, stating the following:

“Of course, there are also outright hackers out there attempting to break into systems, hijack social media accounts, and even bring down the service. Some of them have posted publicly about their attempts.

We don’t expect these attempts to stop. But we do want you to understand why we have taken the steps we have and why we will continue to take steps to maintain the stability and integrity of the game.”

In response to the recent changes made to the Nearby feature in Pokémon GO, Hanke said that they “have heard feedback” and “are actively working on it.”

In closing, Hanke had the following message to all Pokémon GO players:

“Above all, be safe, be nice to your fellow Trainers, and keep on exploring.”
