Nomura On Final Fantasy VII Remake: “I Don’t Believe This Will Happen For The Time Being”

Kingdom Hearts designer and Square Enix illustrator Tetsuya Nomura expounded upon the history of Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Strife, in a recent 8-page spread on the character in Famitsu magazine.

"Fans are looking forward to an oft rumored remake of FFVII, but I don’t believe this will happen for the time being," said Nomura, as translated by Andriasang, addressing further development of Square’s popular protagonist in the near future.

Nomura’s comment regarding a remake would lend credence to Square Enix president Yoichi Wada’s statement that the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII is intended to continue up until the game’s 20th anniversary in 2017. One would imagine a remake of the original game that sparked the craze would be a fitting end to the compilation.

Nomura went on: "However, it’s possible that he will appear in other titles as a guest character."

The last game Cloud appeared in as a playable character was Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Whether or not Dissidia will receive a direct sequel is debatable, but given that the Kingdom Hearts franchise — which Cloud has graced with his presence twice so far — still enjoys a high level of success, Nomura’s hint isn’t all too surprising.
