Sony Has ‘Tested Hundreds’ of PlayStation 5 Backward Compatible Games

During the Mark Cerny Road to PS5 presentation, one of the matters that came up were PlayStation 5 backwards compatible options. A hot topic was that he said that the top 100 most-played games that appeared on the PlayStation 4 would be able to be played right away on the PlayStation 5. However, the PlayStation Blog March 20, 2020 update suggests that the number of titles available at launch could end up being higher. It even stated that “the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games will be playable.”

In the update, it addressed how Sony is looking at different PlayStation 5 backwards compatible games. To be specific, Platform Planning and Management Senior Vice President Hideaki Nishino noted that extensive testing of PlayStation 4 games is already in effect. To be specific, he said, “We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch.”

Nishino also talked about the goals Sony has for the PlayStation 4 games that will run on the PlayStation 5. Ideally, the improved technology would result in better performances. Specifically, his update noted, “higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions.” During the aforementioned testing phase, Sony will be seeing if the developers could perhaps go back to these classic titles to prepare some sort of updates so they’ll run better via PlayStation 5 backward compatibility.

The PlayStation 5 is on track to launch in 2020.
