Godzilla: Singular Point Anime Comes to Netflix from My Hero Academia, Beastars Studios

The recent drop of details from the upcoming Spriggan adaptation has barely cooled on the timelines, but the Netflix Twitter account decided to keep the fires burning with the power of the atom. Godzilla: Singular Point is coming. It’s a new animated series based on the iconic Kaiju monster, and several prominent anime creators and studios are involved in the production.

Not much is known about the actual premise or plot of Godzilla: Singular Point, but the list of names attached to its production is well-regarded. The series will be animated in a collaboration between studios BONES and Orange. BONES produced the My Hero Academia anime, as well as Mob Psycho 100, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and many other acclaimed series. Orange is a little less well-known, but it gained notoriety after the debuts of its CG anime series Land of the Lustrous and Beastars. Via a press release, Netflix noted that BONES and Orange would be working together to blend hand-drawn 2D and CG elements for the Godzilla anime.

Godzilla: Singular Point will be directed by Atsushi Takahashi, who also worked on feature films for Blue Exorcist and Doraemon, as well as the sci-fi anime series Rideback. Character designs will be provided by Kazue Kato, creator of Blue Exorcist. There will be music composed by Kan Sawada, who wrote songs for Yowamushi Pedal.

Two of the most interesting names on the credits list are Eiji Yamamori and Toh EnJoe. Yamamori is an animator associated with Studio Ghibli, working on films like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and as key animator for The Wind Rises. He’ll be designing the show’s Kaiju monsters. Originally a physicist, Toh EnJoe is a Japanese science fiction author and will supervise and write scripts for the series. EnJoe wrote the novel Self-Reference ENGINE, but is probably better known for helping to finish the work of his late contemporary, Project Itoh. The Itoh novel he helped complete, Empire of Corpses, was later adapted into an animated film by Attack on Titan‘s WIT Studio. Godzilla: Singular point will be EnJoe’s first full TV project, though he is credited on scripts for BONES’ experimental sci-fi anthology Space Dandy.

Godzilla: Singular Point will debut on Tokyo MX in Japan and Netflix worldwide in 2021. In the meantime, Kaiju fans can try out Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle and Godzilla: The Planet Eater, the trilogy of Polygon Pictures-produced CG films.
