Canceled Xbox 360 GoldenEye 007 Prototype Appears on YouTube in 4K

A YouTuber called Graslu00 has released 4K video footage of the canceled Xbox Live Arcade game, GoldenEye 007.  The video depicts a full playthrough of the game, as well as some of the multiplayer levels. A Xenia emulator was used to improve the resolution. [Thanks, Video Games Chronicle!]

Graslu00 mentioned in the video’s details that the method he used to play the game is unrelated to a 4chan leak from December 2020, which produced a file that Graslu00 claims is unable to be cracked. He didn’t, however, mention how it was that he got hold of the game, but urged that patience is key. Graslu00 said, “I’ve been told it’ll be released eventually in 2021.” On Twitter, he stated that the game is, for the most part, very similar to the original. According to him, “You wouldn’t notice differences if you don’t compare 1:1.”

The Xbox Live Arcade release of GoldenEye 007 for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was allegedly canceled due to issues with the license. Grant Kirkhope, who worked on GoldenEye 007 as a composer, told Video Game Chronicle that development ran into issues due to companies like Microsoft and Nintendo, James Bond IP owner EON, and actors would all have to be consulted.

GoldenEye 007 released for the Nintendo 64 in August, 1997, and that version of the game remains exclusive to that platform. It was later remade for the Nintendo Wii in 2010, and this version of the game eventually made its way to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the form of an enhanced port called GoldenEye 007: Reloaded. The new version re-imagined portions of the story and was based on Daniel Craig’s depiction of Bond, rather than Pierce Brosnan’s. Online support for the Nintendo Wii version of the game was maintained in Japan until March 30, 2018.
