Sony’s PlayStation 5 pulled ahead of the Nintendo Switch to dominate September 2021 US NPD hardware sales charts. It broke its more than two-year run at the top of the list. According to Matt Piscatella, Executive Director of The NPD Group, the PS5 was the best-selling console in terms of units sold and dollars earned. The Switch led the market in unit sales since dethroning the PS4Â in December 2018. That said, the Switch remains the overall leader in unit sales for 2021 to date. The more expensive PS5 leads in dollar sales.

NPD sales data on US consumer spending on game hardware in September 2021 increased by 49% compared to the same time in 2020. It totaled USD $3.4 billion.
Software sales also saw some milestones, particularly for Bandai Namco’s Tales series. Tales of Arise, the latest game in the franchise, set a new launch month dollar sales record for the entire franchise. It also ranked fifth on the best-selling games chart for the month of September 2021.
Mobile game performance was also up by 28%, compared to the same nine-month time period in 2020. miHoYo’s Genshin Impact was the second highest-earning mobile game in September 2021.
On Nintendo platforms, WarioWare: Get It Together opened the month in second place, behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.Â
On the PS4 and PS5, sports games like Madden NFL 22 and FIFA 22 led the pack in sales. Bethesda’s Deathloop, a timed console exclusive, and Tales of Arise made it into the top five.
The situation was similar on Xbox platforms, though Diablo II: Resurrected and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Tales of Arise was sixth on the Xbox chart.
