Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi Talked About Garland

Editor’s Note: Sakaguchi’s comments on Garland in Final Fantasy may offer spoilers for the game.

Here is the Final Fantasy creator’s full statement about the game, Garland, Chaos, and making a “dot-picture RPG.” He also thanked “those who loved FF” when sharing the translated message.

Garland, who was defeated at the beginning of the story, reincarnated as Chaos 2,000 years ago, continued his reign of darkness, and then became a warrior of light again… and so on in an infinite loop.

Even though it was a dot-picture RPG at the time of the first game, I think it was because I wanted to add depth to the story and thereby elevate it from a toy to a full-fledged entertainment. This was the same intention behind the title and text that appears when crossing the bridge.

Nowadays, games make full use of CG and have developed into massive visuals.

When I look back 35 years ago, I feel as if I had no idea that the changes would be this fast, although of course there was a wish somewhere in my mind to bring about this speed of evolution.

But we ran through it.

The passion of those involved in the creation of games has brought about the present.

The original Final Fantasy first appeared on the NES. More recently, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster brought it to the PC and mobile devices. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin will offer another take on its concepts. It will come to the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Epic Games Store on March 18, 2022. People who pre-order a digital copy will get early access on March 15, 2022.
