Legendary anime studio Studio Ghibli is getting involved with Lucasfilm, the production house best known for producing Star Wars and Indiana Jones. At the moment, nothing more than a brief teaser of the project is available.

Shared by Studio Ghibli’s official Twitter account, the tease consists merely of the Star Wars creator Lucasfilm and Ghibli logos shown together. No other information was released, so it could involve almost anything, like a film, series, or some other collaboration.
Founded by Star Wars creator George Lucas in 1971, Lucasfilm is currently a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for over $4 billion USD. Though its output since the Disney acquisition has been almost exclusively focused on Star Wars-related films, it is possible a new original project could be in the offering for this Ghibli and Lucasfilm hookup. After all, the first film distributed by Lucasfilm under the Disney regime was Strange Magic, an original animated feature. That film was based on a story conceptualized by Lucas himself, and inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Even Star Wars is hardly new to animation, with multiple series under the franchise, including Star Wars: Visions, an anthology of short features produced by famed anime studios.
Studio Ghibli hasn’t been idle, either. In 2020 the studio released Earwig and the Witch, its first fully CG-animated film. It was directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of the famed Hayao Miyazaki. The elder Hayao even came out of retirement temporarily, to work on How Do You Live?, a new animated production that is still in development.
