Beyond The Labyrinth Has Turn Based Battles, But You Don’t Choose Commands

bl1While tri-Ace tends to create action oriented battle systems for their games, Beyond the Labyrinth has turn based battles. The twist is instead of selecting a command like attack, magic or item players choose the strength of the attack and the target. Attack strength changes the turn order since a powerful hit has more recovery time.

Beyond the Labyrinth also has three elements, which are named after rocks-paper-scissors terms in Japanese. If you hit a scissors-type enemy with a rock attack the damage will be released in the air. The next character, friend or foe, can absorb the damage and recover HP. Exploiting weaknesses has a tradeoff, but players can also tweak the turn order by using different attack strengths to block enemies from healing themselves.

These videos demo the battle system and HP absorbtion mechanic. Thanks for sharing them Suicunesol!

Beyond the Labyrinth comes out on January 19 in Japan.
