Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate’s Phase-4 Looks Very Different From Kasumi

Phase-4 was released as a downloadable character for Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate this week, and Team Ninja have released a combo video for the character, along with a few tips and tricks from director Yohei Shimbori. You can read his notes below.

Phase 4 has a very unique play style, so we’ve put together this combo video to give you a feel for how to use her. Her basic concept is to fade into a black mist to move around as she steals bits of damage, but there are a few things you need to know before you can start using her like a pro.

One of the biggest keys to Phase 4 is her kick from Chifu, the stance she enters after 7K, 4K, 3P, and other moves. This move hits twice in rapid succession, so it takes a lot of training to get the timing right for the P+K on the first hit. Other moves have a longer input window than Chifu K, so it may be good to practice with those first.

Her Tenfu stance, on the other hand, is often used to finish up a combo. She can enter it from Chifu K, 66K, 6PK, 8K, and other moves. The three types of moves she can use from Tenfu are H+P (an air throw), P (which keeps juggles going), and K (which keeps her in Tenfu after it hits), so use these appropriately to maximize damage.

These special movements can also be used in Critical Combos. In particular, Chifu P+K is a Critical Burst move, so you can combine this with other moves to shake up your opponent. Or if your opponent is familiar with Phase 4’s strategies, you can avoid these and use something like a throw instead to “throw” them off!

The combos shown here are only a few examples of what Phase 4 can do. They’re not necessarily her highest damage combos, nor are they guaranteed in every situation. Finding the best combo for your opponent’s weight, on uneven terrain, against walls and ceilings, and other fight conditions is a huge part of the fun. I hope you’ll use this video as a basis to experiment and look into her other combos.

Although visually a clone of Kasumi, don’t make the mistake of assuming Phase 4 plays the same – her combos and overall fighting style set her miles apart.

Thanks for watching, and see you in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate!

The next new character headed to Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate as downloadable character is Nyotengu. A release date for her has not been announced yet.
