During the GameSpot-run Play for All charity stream, we got confirmation that Earth Defense Force: World Brothers is headed westward. This unexpected spin-off of the cult classic, bug-shootin’ series will touch down on the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch in early 2021.

An even more drastic departure than the more self-serious Iron RainEarth Defense Force: World Brothers is a cartoony take on the Earth Defense Force made using a Minecraft-like voxel visual style. EDF is already silly when it comes to the numbered games in the series, so World Brothers looks like a really concentrated effort to appeal to new demographics and perhaps just make the fans laugh even more.

Set on a Voxel Earth, World Brothers almost looks like a hero shooter variant with a pretty large cast of colorful soldiers to play as. This is also notably the EDF series‘ debut on the Nintendo Switch. This lower-fidelity art style could also be part of getting this series, which is known for chugging a bit due to the ridiculous number of giant insects on the screen, running smoothly on Nintendo’s handheld.

Lucas White
Lucas writes about video games a lot. Sometimes he plays them. Every now and then he enjoys one. To get on his good side, say nice things about Dragon Quest and Musou. Never mention the Devil May Cry reboot in his presence. Backed Bloodstained on Kickstarter but all his opinions on it are correct regardless.
