Part of our goal in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is to change the past to bring forward as many character options for the Part 3 “present time” scenario to become allies for Eshmel, and that can involve a merger between paths. There may be folks you’ve won over multiple times as a result of recruiting them on different Part 1 runs. You might have replayed storylines, resulting in more than one Leda or Cai. However, once you get past the first battle in Part 3, you actually get to choose which version you want or pay Karmic Shards for mergers.
Editor’s Note: There will be spoilers for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Part 3 below.
Here’s the how Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave character merge feature works when you get to Part 3. That part picks up right where the prologue finished. Eshmel already faced Lind with Troy and Hong Hua, and the two enter the city of Dagsion. After going through a fight with the two against a major boss, which also serves as a quick opportunity to reunite with the Flame Lords and paralogue faction leaders whose fates you managed to change, you’ll find the ruined capital is now habitable again.
Things return to the way they functioned in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Part 1. That is, you get a set number of turns to train, shop, engage in side quests, find materials, and so on to prepare for the next main campaign quest. All the characters you recruited in Part 1 are now in the city in their time skip forms. To gain access to them, you need to speak to them again.
This is when the Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave character merge comes up in Part 3. Whenever you talk to a person to add them to Eshmel’s ranks, you’ll be taken to a screen that lets you see what each version of them looks like and which path they came from. The examples I shared in the gallery below show what happened with Mikaela, who I brought into Part 3 due to her being part of Dietrich’s default crew and recruited into Leda’s army. You can then sort between the two of them to pick the one you wish to import. Their current equipment and items, class, and stats will appear. This will also note if one’s build is particularly notable and stronger. You can see my Dietrich’s Path Mikaela had higher Phys and Hit stats.

As with past parts in the game, you can head to the Obelisk Chamber to go to another route, play through it, and send folks to part three. It’s when you head to the Obelisk Chamber for the first time after going into Part 3 once that the Merging Causality tutorial comes up. If you go to the Shrine of Causality altar, there will be a Merge Causality option there. This will let you pay 300 Karmic Shards for a merger.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is available on the Switch 2.
