How to Beat the Cauldron of Carnage in WoW: The War Within

One of the early encounters in the Liberation of Undermine raid is a show-stopping clash between a robot dinosaur and a cyborg gorilla, with mechanics that require two halves of the raid to coordinate across an arena. It’s an intimidating fight, so to help you survive this colossal clash we’ve got a guide on how to beat the Cauldron of Carnage raid encounter in World of Warcraft.

Before the Cauldron of Carnage fight starts you should divide your WoW raid in to two equal teams, one to assign to Torq and one for Flarendo. It’s a good idea to give each of your tanks a raid marker, so their assigned teams can follow that when the visual effects start flying and movement gets messy.

Despite the theatrics involved, this is actually a fairly simple 2-phase fight. Each group will take one boss and lead it to the side of the arena so you avoid their damage reduction, where they will deal with their individual mechanics mostly separately. When the bosses reach 100% energy, however, they will charge to the center for a Colossal Clash phase. This deals raid-wide damage that increases each time the phase repeats, as well as sending waves of fire and bolts of lightning across the floor. However, it’s also a good time to get some damage in, as you’ll be able to damage both bosses at the same time with cleave effects.

After the Colossal Clash ends, each team will need to swap which boss they take in order to allow a stacking debuff to wear off. They will then return to the sides of the arena with their boss and repeat phase 1. You’ll continue this cycle until the bosses are dead, but make sure to kill them at around the same time or their damage will begin ramping massively. If one boss has significantly lower health than the other, you may want to consider re-assigning people to the other team or just slowing your damage more generally.

Flarendo the Furious Strategy

Flarendo is the robotic, yellow dinosaur that stands to your left on entering the arena. The tank will want to have them face the wall during the fight and use mitigation when it uses the Eruption Stomp ability, which knocks you up as well as launching fire waves across the ground. Everyone else will want to group up behind and deal damage, while avoiding these waves.

When Flarendo uses Scrapbomb the entire group will need to stand in the AoE to spread out the damage, while one player is targeted by Blastburn Roarcannon. This is a line-shaped AoE that follows the target player, who will need to drag it out of the group and against the wall so it doesn’t hit players on the other side of the arena either. After a few seconds the marker will lock in place and the player can run back to the group for the Scrapbomb.

Torq the Tempest Strategy

Torq is the cyborg ape that forms the second part of the Cauldron of Carnage encounter in WoW, and his mechanics require that you be really careful with your movement. This is because moving fills up a bar called Static Charge, dealing increasing damage-over-time and stunning the player for several seconds when filled. To avoid this you will need to “stutter-step” by moving a little bit and then stopping to allow the bar to empty as you dodge lightning AoE’s caused by Thunderdrum Salvo. Tanks, meanwhile, should make sure to mitigate as much of the damage from Lightning Bash as possible, as any left over will also be applied to the raid.

How to Beat the Cauldron of Carnage on Heroic mode in WoW: The War Within

On the Heroic version of the Cauldron of Carnage fight in WoW, the Colossal Clash phase remains mostly unchanged other than increased damage. However, both Flarendo and Torq get new moves to watch out for. For the group dealing with Flarendo, his Scrapbomb will now launch fire waves after exploding so you’ll need to stay near the edges of the AoE and be ready to move out once it goes off. Occasionally a random player will be hit with Molten Phlegm and have to run out of the group to avoid hitting others with pulsing area damage.

Torq, meanwhile, summons Voltaic Images that fixate on and chase specific players for about 12 seconds each. You’ll need to run away until they disappear, but in order to avoid building up too much Static Charge the group will need to stun, slow, or otherwise crowd-control the images as much as they can. This is a high priority, as if they hit you they will explode into a lot of AoE damage and leave a pool on the ground that not only hurts anyone within it but silences and pacifies them too.
