How to Get the Necromancy of Thay Book in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Baldur’s Gate series is full of optional secrets and events that are easily missed if you don’t go off the beaten path. The Necromancy of Thay book in Baldur’s Gate 3 is one such example, representing a way to get a powerful new spell rather early on in the story. Here’s how to do it.

Where to Get the Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3

First and foremost, you want to get the Necromancy of Thay book itself in Baldur’s Gate 3. To do that, head to the Blighted Village west of the Druids at the Emerald Grove. The house south of the waypoint in town has a cellar in it with a secret entrance. Look for the lever behind the crates on the northern side of the basement.

This will lead you to the Ornate Mirror. You’ll need to say the right words to it for it to let you inside. Enter the secret laboratory on the other side of the mirror and you’ll find a prison cell locked on the left side of you. Unlock it and head inside to find the Necromancy of Thay book waiting for you there.

However, you aren’t done yet. There is an amethyst missing from the book you’ll need to fully activate it. For this part, head to the spider cave, which is under the well in the middle of the Blighted Village. You have two choices here: sneak around or fight all the spiders.

There are a lot of tough spiders, but if you can go all the way past them, you’ll find the Dark Amethyst at the end of the cave. With this, you can finally open up the book. You have three options here with it: destroy it, give it to Astarion, or open it yourself.

I don’t recommend destroying it, since you’ll have to face three tough opponents and it isn’t worth it. The Astarion option is fine, but you should honestly open it yourself. To do this, though, you’ll have to pass through three skill checks, so I suggest saving before each one. If you successfully open it, you’ll receive a new trait, which includes the useful Speak with Dead spell.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC and will release for PS5 on September 6, 2023.
