Iron Galaxy Studios, the developer behind Divekick and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, is the new team that will be working on Killer Instinct on Xbox One, going forward.

Iron Galaxy CEO Dave Lang shared the news with Polygon, describing the project as “probably the biggest thing we’ve ever done”.

Killer Instinct on Xbox One was originally developed by Double Helix, a studio which was recently acquired by Amazon. At present, Double Helix is completing work on Fulgore, the final character that will be available as part of the season 1 DLC for the game.

Alongside Fulgore’s development, Double Helix have also been bringing Iron Galaxy up-to-speed on Killer Instinct, which runs on the Hex engine, proprietary technology developed by Double Helix itself.

This is a brand-new engine, this is a brand-new process, and we’re just coming to terms with what’s possible," said Lang. In order to facilitate the learning process, around 10 Iron Galaxy staff members flew out to Double Helix earlier in March and spent a week at the studio.

Lang also shared that Microsoft had first gotten in touch with him about four months ago, about transitioning Killer Instinct’s development to a new studio, in light of the Double Helix acquisition, which hadn’t been made public at the time.
