Nintendo shared a new Kirby Air Riders: Development Insights interview series with Director Masahiro Sakurai, and in it he noted that the team almost considered having the Kirby Air Ride City Trial map from the GameCube game in the new version of the mode when putting together Skyah. However, he explained it wasn’t technically possible.
When discussing the Skyah map in Kirby Air Riders, Sakurai mentioned that was a taxing enough task before factoring in the possible Kirby Air Ride City Trial map. He noted, “…During the design planning phase for City Trial, we actually considered bringing back the old map as one of our options. But, we just couldn’t pull it off… Things don’t work like they did in the past. It would take tremendous cost and effort. It took everything we could just to create the base for Skyah, and it wasn’t simply a matter of porting it over.”
Masahiro Sakurai mentioned the team working on it had to factor in things like multiplayer, attacks, high jumps, “the ratio of surface level, underground, and building areas,” and speeds of machines. He also explaining that all of those factors and how taxing things could be are why there were no field variations. He also mentioned, “Previously, I was the only one setting the machine parameters, so I only needed to satisfy myself. This time, however, a lot of people were deeply involved in making balance adjustments.”
Kirby Air Riders is available on the Switch 2 and Kirby Air Ride is on the GameCube, and both games feature a City Trial mode.
