Marvelous’ iPad Game Turns Twitter Followers Into Troops

Apple’s new iPad launches in North America this weekend, and Marvelous Entertainment could be one of the first Japanese publishers to support the device with an RPG that relies on social-networking as a base — namely your Twitter account.

The game, titled Followars, uses the number of tweets, followers and other information associated with your account to generate an in-game character complete with stats. Players can choose to have their followers appear in Followars as characters. It would appear the battles are automatic for the most part, after your characters have been “rolled.” Occasionally, tweets will appear in the game, although, what purpose this
serves is not clear. The game will also include online
rankings once it is published.

The game is being designed by Route 24 founder Kenichi Nishi, field planner on Chrono Trigger and director on Chibi-Robo!: Plug into Adventure!. A release date and price have yet to be finalized. It’s an interesting move on MMV’s part and publishing simpler games for the App Store could prove to be a safer bet than physical media, given the company’s financial state of affairs.
