New Super Mario Bros. 2 emphasizes collecting coins. There are different ways to increase the number of coins you gather as you run through a stage, including a gold ring that converts all enemies to gold, which yield gold upon defeat. Another item, the gold block makes gold coins pop out of Mario’s head.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 also has a Coin Rush mode, which we’ve reported on before. In Coin Rush, you play three randomly selected stages and try to collect as many coins as you can. The game keeps track of all the coins you collect across all its modes, and Nintendo say that you can hit the million mark if you play well enough.

As previously reported, New Super Mario Bros. 2 will have local co-op multiplayer across the entire game and DLC in the form of extra Coin Rush stages. It’s scheduled for release on August 19th in the U.S. and you can read our hands-on impressions here.
