Nintendo are in the process of laying the groundwork for a new Research & Development facility in Kyoto, reports Japanese newspaper, Nikkan Kyogo Shimbun. Nintendo aim to have construction work begin in January 2012, and have it completed in 2013.

This new R&D facility will be built upon a 40,582 square metre area acquired by Nintendo in 2008, and will be situated closer to Nintendo’s main headquarters in Kyoto. It will span seven storeys in total and be capable of housing 1,500 employees.

News of this facility first broke back in 2009, reported by Japanese newspaper Nikkei’s online financial news service, who revealed that Nintendo were investing 12.8 billion yen (or $141.6 million) in the project, and hoped to improve R&D efficiency by consolidating it into a single location.
