Nintendo used its Nintendo Today app to solve the mystery of what was going on in the “Close to You” animated short, as it turns out that video was a Pikmin cartoon. It turns out the “entity” moving the baby’s toys and pacifier around were the creatures from the video game series. However, we still don’t know what this is a teaser for and if it could be leading up to a game or new successor to Pikmin Short Movies

The YouTube version of the “Close to You” animated short remains as is, and there’s no updated upload on the channel yet with the Nintendo Today version that shows this is a Pikmin cartoon. However, the video in the app clearly shows Pikmin are everywhere. All different types surround the mother and baby in the introduction, and Blue, Red, and Yellow variants are responsible for moving the pacifier around a bunch.

If this does end up being a series of animated short videos, it would follow the precedent set by the Pikmin Short Movies released in the past. Some of those were even, at one point, sold in bundles on the 3DS and Wii U. Those are available on YouTube now. As an example of how those looked in comparison to “Close to You,” here are three of them. First, here’s “The Night Juicer.”

You can see “Occupational Hazards” below.

Next up is “Treasure in a Bottle.”

We should learn more about what this new Pikmin project is tied to in the future. The most recent mainline game is Pikmin 4 for the Switch, and the Pikmin Bloom spin-off is on mobile devices.
