Capcom has announced that it is preparing celebrations for the 20th anniversary of Okami. The company notes that the anniversary day will fall on April 20, 2026, based on the game’s inaugural release in Japan 20 years ago.
Not many details about the celebrations have been divulged in this announcement. Capcom instead shares an illustration of Amaterasu and Issun, the main characters of Okami, in the new tweet published on the game series’ official Japanese social media account.
The original Japanese announcement tweet is also available to read right below:
A translation of the above tweet is also available below:
Today is the #DebutDay!
The debut of Amaterasu and Issun, or in other words the release date of the first Okami, is April 20, 2006.
Which means, in 15 more days, Okami will have its 20th anniversary on April 20, 2026!
We are also preparing a 20th anniversary project, so look forward to it!
Following the release of Okamiden for DS in 2010, Capcom announced an all-new sequel to Okami at The Game Awards 2024. Hideki Kamiya, the director and scenario writer for the first Okami, makes his return as the director for this new sequel. Capcom has still yet to announce a release window for the sequel, so it is yet to be known whether the new Okami game will be available within the anniversary year or not.
Okami first appeared in Japan for PlayStation 2 on April 20, 2006. Capcom later released Wii and PlayStation 3 versions of the game in 2009 and 2012, respectively. The game is readily available as Okami HD for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC.
