Anyone who owns one of Panic’s Playdate consoles should double-check which OS version they are running and take the time to update it. The company sent out warning emails to registered owners noting the secure certificates for older versions will expire on October 15, 2026. While devices with the older firmware will be able to run after that date, connecting to servers again and updating them will become more complicated as a result of the expiration.
The announcement included step-by-step directions to fix it. First, you need to fully charge and head to your Playdate. Then, head to the Settings section. Scroll down to System. By selecting that, you can then begin the update process by choosing “System Update.” The minimum Playdate OS you need to get to via an update is 3.0.5. However, if you haven’t downloaded a patch in a while, then going through this process might get you up to 3.1.2.
At the moment, the Playdate site only explains how to update the OS via WiFi. The announcement did note it will still be possible to get patches and your handheld working again if you don’t make this cut-off date, but it is possible it could involve getting the existing Playdate SDK available for Windows and Linux PCs.
This warning comes ahead of a major update for the system. Its Season 3 season pass of games starts this week. The first two titles will show up on October 8, 2026, if someone purchased it. New games will appear each week after that.
The Panic Playdate is available worldwide, and people need to ensure their systems have the 3.0.5 firmware by on October 15, 2026.
