Strategy RPG, Skulls of the Shogun, has a release date. The game, developed by 17-bit (formerly Haunted Temple Games), will be released for Xbox Live Arcade, Windows 8, Microsoft Surface and Windows Phone on January 30th.

The Xbox 360 version will be available for 1200 Microsoft Points on the Xbox Live Marketplace, the Windows 8/Surface version for $14.99 in the Microsoft Store, and the Windows Phone version for $6.99 on the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Skulls of the Shogun was developed with the goal of modernizing and streamlining the turn-based strategy genre. Earlier this year, designer, Jake Kazdal, shared with us: “I wanted to recreate my favorite games of [the 16 and 32-bit] era, but with some modern trimmings.”

“You wanna just update the spots that need updating, some polish that hasn’t been put before in certain places, and it’s turned out to be a really successful formula. I think this studio will be founded on classic genres with modern polish.”

You can read our interview with Kazdal about the development of the game here.

Skulls of the Shogun will also feature online multiplayer battles. You can play up to four-player local and online multiplayer battles across all four platforms the game is being released for, and also transfer your single-player campaign progress between them.
