Last week in Japan, we saw several key releases with Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, Yakuza 4 on PS4, Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet Complete Edition, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ retail release on PS4. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of January 14 to January 20, 2019.

The top dog of the week is Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown with a whopping 202,379 units sold on PS4 to chart at #1. There hasn’t been a main-numbered game since Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation so there isn’t much to give it a fair comparison, but that’s a huge debut for it nonetheless.

At #2 we have last week’s top with New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with 88,840 units sold on Switch. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate followed at #3 with 49,533 units sold and is currently sitting at 2,726,273 units sold through retail in Japan.

The next new entry of the week charted at #4 and it is Yakuza 4 on PS4 with 18,440 units sold, a bit less than the Yakuza 3 remaster’s 26,047 debut back in August 2018. Super Mario Party followed at #5 with 16,752 units sold on Switch. As for other new titles, Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet Complete Edition opened at #13 with 7,474 units sold on PS4 and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was right behind at #14 with 7,447 units sold for PS4.

In hardware sales, it wasn’t too different from the week prior when we saw the big holiday numbers come to a drop. The PlayStation 4 sold 9,505 units plus an extra 6,958 from PS4 Pros to combine for 16,463 units between the two. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console of the week with 71,139 units sold to make up about 75% of all hardware sales. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 7,195,961 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.
