Following the release of Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2, Japan is getting another game in the series on the 3DS Virtual Console next week: Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.

As the title suggests, this game stars Wario in the lead role, and was actually the first time you could play as him (his very first appearance was in Super Mario Land 2, as its villain).

Back in 1994, Wario Land was developed by Nintendo’s R&D1 group headed by the late Gunpei Yokoi. The team responsible for the development of the Game Boy, as well as the 2D Metroid and Kid Icarus games.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 will cost 400 yen in Japan, and is slated for release on December 14th.
