Should I pick the File Not Found Background in Starfield?

In Bethesda’s space RPG, the Starfield Background feature is an option in the character creator that gives your protagonist a childhood history and lore. The feature also unlocks unique perks that can impact your game later on. Mysteriously, the last option you are given in the Background menu is “File Not Found,” which has a cryptic description. So what does it actually do?

The File Not Found Background gives you unique dialogue options that you can occasionally bring up in conversations, and that’s it. Outside of that, it doesn’t actually unlock any hidden perks or have any major impact on your story in Starfield’s early game. So why should you pick it? Compared to other options, “The File Not Found” background is a balanced choice that takes skills from several other backgrounds.

If you choose The File Not Found background, your character will come equipped with the Wellness, Ballistics, and Piloting skills. Wellness increases your maximum health points by 10%, while Ballistics will increase your ship’s weapon damage by 10%. And finally, Piloting will allow you to use thrusters with your ship to increase its boosting speeds.

Overall, the Background doesn’t live up to the mysterious hype that its intriguing description may tease. However, the File Not Found option is a neutral background choice for your character with a balanced selection of skills. Bethesda is essentially giving you a choice not to have a Background at all, and that is why the description is missing.

Starfield is available now for the Xbox Series X and PC.
