Why Does Agent 47 Assassinate Diana In Hitman Absolution?

As previously reported, Hitman Absolution starts out by having Agent 47 kill Diana Burnwood, his longtime handler for the agency, after he receives a contract to assassinate her. A new trailer for Absolution gives a little more insight into the lead-up to this incident:

It looks like Diana’s marked as a traitor by the agency after snooping around for information she wasn’t supposed to access, which is how the contract to assassinate her came about.

 

While IO Interactive have said that Hitman Absolution doesn’t take place in any specific Hitman timeline, the trailer depicts scenes from Hitman: Blood Money, the previous game. Additionally, Del Rey are publishing a novel that takes place between Blood Money and Absolution, which means that the two are connected on some level.

 

What happens after Agent 47 kills Diana? She makes a dying request for him to find a girl named Victoria, and he takes it on as a personal mission.
