Top-seller: Mario Kart 7 – 35,105

PlayStation Vita sales: 15,219 | Total sales: 516,481

This Week In Sales: 14,000 People Bought Tri Aces New Game

Mario Kart 7 remained the leader of the pack last week as new releases got off to a relatively slow start. Sega’s Rhythm Heaven and the Emperor’s Treasure on 3DS was the best-selling new game for the week, at 31,600 copies sold.

The next new release on the top-20 chart was Onechanbara Z: Kagura on the Xbox 360, with 22,000 copies sold. Meanwhile, Konami and Tri-Ace’s 3DS dungeon-crawler, Beyond the Labyrinth (above), sold about 14,000 copies.

Notable new releases that were missing from the chart entirely included Kiki Trick (Wii) and Wipeout 2048 (PlayStation Vita). Speaking of which, Vita sales dropped for another week in a row, with the device being outsold by the PSP again. Next week’s release of Tales of Innocence R may provide some brief respite for the Vita.

On the whole, next week’s chart will be more exciting with Resident Evil: Revelations, Armored Core V and Tales of Innocence R sales to look forward to.

Man 3DS sure is mopping the floor with Vita

    • Testsubject909

It’s not unexpected, the 3DS has released a few limited editions of itself and that sells like candy in Japan especially with obsessive collectors of which there are many.

Nintendo is also seen as a more kid friendly console maker so there are more parents out there who’ll be willing to purchase it for their kids despite whatever health warnings were given out (mainly because it’d only be the more seriously informed gamers who’d know about those health warnings in the first place as opposed to the more common gamer or the parents to gamers).

Next, there’s a few key titles that came out on the 3DS that guarantees to sell consoles and a not-too-recent price drop that made the 3DS the cheaper option.

Really, just wait until a few key titles comes out on the Vita because the consoles by themselves never sell, one reason why I’m not really fond of the idea of console wars. We’re gamers, we follow the games, and this will show once a few key titles comes out on the Vita that will bring gamers around to purchasing it.

That said, even if I’m not fond of the whole console war shenanigan, I’m still fond of the theoretical and practical effects that consoles have on our gaming industry. I don’t see much stemming from glassless 3D technology affecting our gaming (especially with a more interesting 3D effect created by 2D imagery in Gravity Daze/Rush’s cutscenes which is similar to head tracking and that, I would argue, improves one’s immersion in the gaming universe as opposed to the more gimmicky 3D applied in the 3DS) so I do find myself rooting to see the Vita live well and long enough for it to come out with a few games that will certainly alter the ways many gamers out there think about how one could control the games they play.

I don’t really expect seeing anything concrete for the next year or two though. But if I do. I will be pleasantly surprised. (And no, I don’t see 3D as having added anything that impressively marking for Mario 3D. I don’t know about other people, but I’ve long learned how to discern distance on a 2D plane alone.)

      • James Beatty

The 3D makes the world feel more alive and it lets you judge distances so you can jump more accurately in a 3D space. 3D only adds to certain games designed for 3D, it’s a visual enhancer that actually does more than (for example) HD. But 3D is not the only thing the 3DS has to offer. It has very nice visuals (RE revelations looks amazing) it has motion controls, it has street pass, backwards compatibility with one of the biggest (and best) video game libraries of all time (DS), awesome 1st party support, among other things. Also, seeing how well it is selling worldwide i predict it will receive as much if not more support than the DS did.

I do think the vita is cool, but i dont’ think it’s necessary. It’s being marketed as a portable ps3 but it’s supposed to be a handheld. Handheld games are meant to be portable, enjoyable in small chunks. It’s also REALLY expensive which is one reason it’s not selling too well, it’s also pretty expensive to develop for. It’s also lacking in big exclusive like the 3DS has. MH 3G, mario kart, and super mario 3D land sell systems. UC, little big planet, mod nation racers (without online for some reason) do sell systems too, but no where near as much. I do expect the vita to pick up steam but it’s probably going to suffer the same fate the PSP  did especially since it’s already been hacked and i think they are close to having it run pirated games. I’ll be picking it up when/if it gets KH, just like i did with the PSP

        • sandra10

Wait. You think that portable games should be enjoyable in small chunks but you gush over games like Monster Hunter, Revelations, and Kingdom Hearts. How are those games you can play in small chunks? And where’s your proof that it’s expensive to develop for?

          • James Beatty

I love Kingdom hearts. I bought a psp for that game so i don’t care if i need to play it right next to my TV screen on my smaller screen. I have only played MH on the ps2 and the wii and i don’t play it on handhelds but japan love MH and they love to play it everywhere. As for RE revelations it’s really good and it is enjoyable in small chunks. Or at least from what i have read. Also, i don’t mind console experiences on a portable, but not all (exaggeration) of the games.
“And where’s your proof that it’s expensive to develop for?” The dev kits are relatively cheap, but making the game still costs quite a bit. Paying artists programming, etc. they need to pay for ps3/360 level development on a handheld.

          • sandra10

This comes off as hypocritical to me. Revelations isn’t enjoyable in small chunks like how MK7 or a match in DoA are enjoyable. It’s similar to Golden Abyss in that the chapters/episodes are smaller to get through than the console entries but still a good length. And I remember seeing comments from you saying that you’d buy the Vita when more “interesting” games like Ragnarok Odyssey, a hunting game, come out for it. So I don’t believe you when you say you don’t play MH on handhelds. But I’m a cynic.

Like I said, show me proof. I hardly believe that making a Vita game costs substantially more than a 3DS game. And I’m very sure that it doesn’t cost the same to make a PS3 game either because Vita games don’t require as much detail as HD console games. Why? Smaller screen. No one’s going to notice if the games aren’t as detailed.

Also, a correction to your other post: the Vita hasn’t been hacked.

          • James Beatty

@sandra10:disqus  Maybe not the story mode but i enjoyed mercanaries as a portable game and this game has something similar to it. Also, RE is another series i love a lot, not as much as KH but still. I also said there isn’t anything wrong with console like experiences on the go, but that shouldn’t be the “gimmick” of a handheld. As for MH on the go, i wasn’t fond of playing it on the PSP for long periods of time. I don’t have proof of how much it costs to develop a vita game vs a 3DS game but it is quite a bit more. In terms of visuals it looks like it costs more to make a vita game than the 3DS, wii, DS, and PSP. It is probably cheaper than ps3/360 for now.

Also, the PSV has been (or is about to be hacked)
            http://pspslimhacks.com/ps-vita-hello-world-confirmed-hbl-in-the-works-for-ps-vita/
The ability to run pirated games on it is still not available but they are working on it and the PSP hacking community was pretty big.

          • sandra10

You said, “handheld games are meant to be portable, enjoyable in small chunks.” I’m not holding you to anything you didn’t say. It’s also noticeable that the big games for the 3DS, especially the third party games, are pretty much all big console experiences. It’s not like anybody I know actually plays the Mario games for short bursts either (unlike their phone apps). People invest a good chunk of time into playing these games. A lot of people I know beat SM3DLand in a day or two. They didn’t do that by playing for 5 minutes at a time. Also, it’s not like the Vita doesn’t have games that can be played in really short bursts: WipeOut, LBP, ModNation, Escape Plan, etc.

If you don’t have proof you can’t really claim it is quite a bit more.

You do remember that the 3DS has a similar “hack”, right? And that happened soon after it was released. Yet there’s no real hack for that.

          • theworldofnoboundries

Well we don’t really need proof to know that Vita’s game will cost more to develop compared to 3DS seeing how both graphics differs.

Better graphics= More cost to spend on developing game.

It is like u are saying that developing a game for Wii can be more expensive that developing a game for PS3 which is impossible.

          • sandra10

Well, we need proof to support all of our statements, and I’m still waiting to hear about actual development costs rather than people saying that, oh, it looks better so it must cost more to develop. I don’t see why Revelations would cost that much more to make than Burning Skies. Also, games that have better graphics don’t necessarily have higher budgets. Crysis, one of the best looking games ever made, cost EA less to make than Shenmue. Another thing that’s important to take notice of is the price that we’re paying for the games, and 3DS and Vita games cost pretty much the same thing at least in the US and Japan, can’t speak for Europe. Usually development costs and the cost of game are directly related.

          • theworldofnoboundries

Well for ur example, of course Shenmue will cost more compared to Crysis lol.

As Shenmue is the first game which introduce sandbox system, QTR system, weather system and many other innovative system which in the end become the basis of most of the action game now.

Meanwhile when Crysis is developed, many game already possess that amount of graphics.

Not to forget, It is not only graphics that cause one game to cause a lot, Shenmue cause a lot also because of the big amount of research done Real Life about how the real eniviroment works, how the game city is created closely resembling the real life city and how the Ryo Hazuki’s kung fu moves is all taken directly from Kung Fu master in China with movement tracker camera.

So i think ur comparison here is not correct.

          • sandra10

“Not to forget, It is not only graphics that cause one game to cause a lot”

That’s kind of my point when I said, “Also, games that have better graphics don’t necessarily have higher budgets.” So why are you arguing with me?

        • Testsubject909

I think you misunderstood what I was getting at.

I’m mainly arguing two things when it comes to the addition to gameplay.

Stereoscopic 3D vs Headtracking style 3D

and the long-term gaming effects of a multi-touch front screen and back touchpad vs stereoscopic 3D.

Between Stereoscopic 3D and a headtracking style 3D effect provided by the game which shown by Gravity Daze could actually be controlled by Sixaxis itself and provide a full screen 3D effect to not only the gamer but all onlookers, providing the illusion of a window into a 3D world as opposed to a pop-out book effect with limited vision and the inability to peer into hidden corners through said window. I feel that the headtracking/sixasix style 3D has higher potential and hope in terms of immersion and gameplay and provide a similar though far more subdued aid in enabling a player to judge distances, making the 3D effect applied by the 3DS more of a short term gimmick that’s reminiscent of the 3D craze back in the 20th century. Short term and leading nowhere.

As for the gaming implications between a multi-touch screen and back touchpad vs the addition of glassless 3D visual effects, the Vita provides a whole slew of optional control methods that could be implemented in interesting manners to many existing games or could lead to it’s own style of hybrid games and gameplay control pending. But, like with Nintendo’s DS stylus touchscreen controls, I don’t expect any company to make all that a significant use of it for the next year or two, save for perhaps a few time saving ideas such as shortcut keys on screen as displayed with Uncharted Golden Abyss (and I’m not even interested in that game when considering the whole list of upcoming Vita games).

I’m not debating the accessibility, the available library or any of the other features that the 3DS or the Vita possesses or their own limitations. Or rather. I don’t want to, I’ve already done that to death. I just want to discuss about the potentials of a window into another world by a flat 2D 3D illusion instead of a stereoscopic 3D illusion and the potentials of touch controls if properly implemented (which again, I have low hopes of such implementation in the upcoming years).

well that kind of effect isn’t something exactly new. (at least what i think you are talking about) It was done on the DSi a long time ago and i wouldn’t expect to see it in a lot of vita games. As for the back touchpad…Well, i can’t really say anything about it, i can’t see them doing anything really good with it, but i’m not a game designer (yet ;) )

          • Testsubject909

Then take some time to ponder on it.

How would you incorporate back touchpad control in a meaningful manner in a game? Any genre, any style and make it actually expand upon the gameplay as opposed to just being a gimmick.Alternative control methods are accepted as well, though they need to be more then just tacked on.Pending on your creative thinking, you might end up in the same rut that most game developers were at the initial release of the DS.

As for headtracking, look it up on youtube. Then think to yourself that instead of tracking your head, it tracks the basic position of your handheld and from there, tilting it will have the effect of shifting the view on screen to enable you that same visual 3D effect, then tweak to ensure that said tracking works in the advantage of the player by ensuring that it isn’t too pronounced but present enough to provide a 3D feel and an aid in awareness of 3D space.

    Nintendo domination once again! :D

    • Testsubject909

Hmm… Felt like bringing something up but then happy memories of old times on the Nes an Snes came creeping up.

      So yeah. Congrats Nintendo.

      [edit]
And Tri-Ace, you know you always got my support… Just don’t do anything stupid like you did with Star Ocean 4′s story. Never again please.

      • James Beatty

Nintendo seems to be getting back to the SNES days. The 3DS is getting pretty awesome and the wii U seems extremely promising and it’s getting a lot of support from developers. :D

        • Testsubject909

I still argue that the best game that could be made for the Wii U would be Fatal Frame. Hands down it would be the best use of the Wii U’s controller and provide the greatest depth in both immersion and gameplay control without actually being a gimmick and actually being an extension, an improvement and a natural evolution for the gameplay.

  • James Beatty

I wonder how well Revelations will sell. I hope is sells really well, it’s a great game :D
I also heard that Beyond the labyrinth is selling poorly. I hope that’s not the case :(

    • Ryos

Between this and Frontier Gate, Tri-Ace doesn’t seem to be drawing a ton of attention at the moment, which is a shame because I’ve liked all their games (at least the battle systems…).

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

Oh boy, things don’t seem good for the Vita…

    • http://www.facebook.com/Zekushion Dylan Anantha

Yeah, you would think they would have learned their lesson from the DS, PSP, PS3, and 3DS. They really need a better lineup. Do they really think they can market it on such a sub-par lineup? (At least they have Uncharted, Gravity Daze, Tales of Innocence and Shinobido, or they would be screwed)

      • Testsubject909

Sony always seems to be banking on long term effect rather then the immediate on release profit and it’s shown quite often in their decisions.

But I do agree, they could have brought a stronger lineup. Even just a lazy port with a few additional items for Monster Hunter on the Vita would’ve guaranteed them a million sold units in Japan.

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Sony’s problem is that they’re too reliant on third-parties in Japan. The only thing that made the PSP a moderate success was Monster Hunter, which led the way for more support. Of course, no other game released on PSP ever came close to Monster Hunter in sales either.

In the west, the situation is a little different, since God of War and Uncharted are popular enough to sell systems, and will help the Vita move a few units. But again, those aren’t the kind of games that sell consistently well over a long period of time.

          • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

You know, I didn’t even think about that part….

Oh My Gawd!! I just bought Iwata’s hair on ebay. *sniffs* Hey this isn’t Iwata’s hair!! He uses lilac roses shampoo not mango passion.

Um…I’m just gonna pretend that I did not see anything…
          Weird…

          • PoweredByHentai

Dear god, no.  I like to see sexy Etna, but Man-Etna is kind of traumatic.

          • Testsubject909

Personally I prefer to keep the evidence for blackmail.

It’s a bit late to say it but hey. Better late then never.

  • aoihana

Oh god, I completely forgot about Labyrinth, as excited as I was. (; ̄Д ̄)

I think I should buy it, but honestly, I think I should hold off first. This is why I never finish the games I start. (。>。<。)

I just keep buying and buying moving from one game to the next. I should wait a couple months and enjoy New Love Plus and Project Mirai first. (^v^)

Otherwise, Labyrinth will end up like 7th Dragon 2020(Being enjoyed by my friend since I hardly touched it). (◕‿◕✿)

    • Testsubject909

There’s just so much to be excited/depressed about.

It’s not much of a surprise of a few things will come to escape our attention.

I wanted to be the “my friend” you mentioned there. =/

      • aoihana

I’d let you borrow it, but sending UMD’s via the internet isn’t possible. ┐(‘~`;)┌

        for now. (*^ワ^*)

Konami, Y U NO MARKET Beyond the Labyrinth properly? :/ Frontier Gate, another game from Konami x Tri Ace was received to underwhelming sales domestically.

It sucks, I really wanted Beyond the Labyrinth to perform better. Here’s hoping Konami and Tri-Ace will take some profit out of it still.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I don’t know that it’s necessarily Konami’s fault. It’s a dungeon-crawler. Not many people are going to run out and buy one of those, especially on a userbase of just 4.7 million. :P

      • Gatchaman1

Still…14,000 out of 4.7 million? How did Etrian Odyssey do on NDS?

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Etrian Odyssey did very well, but those games always had a focus. Atlus made a big deal out of the fact that they targeted oldschool, hardcore gamers, and I think having that sort of laser-thin focus always helps when dealing with a niche product.

Plus, the first EO was released in 2007, well after the DS had built up a massive userbase!

You bring up a great point, though. When EO inevitably comes to 3DS, it should be interesting to see how it does.

      • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Well sure, but it’s still a fact that the game was not properly shown until like two weeks before it’s release? They kept it shrouded in mistery for as long as they could. While the target audience may not be vast, they really should have at least shown more of this game much before it’s release, as to keep the fanbase interested and to possibly cater to some more gamers who weren’t initially interested but could be after seeing some more of this game.

I for one have never been a fan of dungeon-crawlers, and still I find myself interested in this game much because of the music and overall ambiance of the game. I’m sure they could convince some more gamers like me to give it a try ;)

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

OK, I can’t argue with that. Even we had no idea just what the heck the game was about until very recently, hahaha.

  • Suicunesol

-_- Hey guys. Those are indeed low sales for Labyrinth, but just take a look at everything on the chart. Sales are low across the board this week. It’s the post-holiday effect, right? This may have been the best the title could have hoped for at a time like this.

Maybe Revelations won’t sell so well either.

  • riceisnice

The Ps Vita was released in Japan right? I’m asking because I don’t see a single vita game on the list…

    • http://twitter.com/josequijano jose

The only Vita game released this week was Wipeout 2048, last week you could barely see the launch games on the list, next week is Tales of Innocence R and soon after other JRPGs. Those are the dates when you see boost of sales, also… all platforms sold less this week except for PS2 and 360 (likely due to Onechanabra)

    • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

Well, hard to say. I thought at least one game would at least make on the list, for the most part.

But I guess not. I really don’t understand game sales very well. But I’m sure someone else might tell you.

    • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

They don’t count online sales and online sales was one of the big things of the vita..

So yeah. Besides there aren’t many vita’s out at the moment, will be more interesting to see how it fairs in the west. It’s the first FPS handheld after all.

Thats too bad about BtL. I still hope it finds its way here somehow, alongside Bravely Default and Fire Emblem.

  • PrinceHeir

    Onechanbara Z Kagura!!!

    can’t believe it’s not selling at least 50K :(

that’s why i encourage D3 to put the game multiplatform.

oh well here’s hoping they make an PS3 complete version just like Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Gal Gun etc..

and FFXIII-2 slowing down sales. oh well still waiting for my NA copy :P

  • Kitestwinblades

Rhythm Thief surpassed my exceptions XD Did MUCH better than I thought.
Good job Sega! Day one x3

  • Draparde

i forgot all about BtL…i didint even know it came out in japan XD. well…i hope that was good for them sales wise… i’d so buy it if i had a japanese 3DS/knew japanese

  • AzureNova

I’m just happy that Beyond the Labyrinth and Onechanbara Z: Kagura are in the top 10 =)

    • http://twitter.com/NeverUnplaying Sonny Oliveira

I hope Onechanbara Z gets localized. Not impossible since the last 360 one and the Wii one did.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Let’s not get into that sort of thing in here, OK? These posts are meant for reasonable discussion, not stirring up petty arguments.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Fitzpatrick-Phillips/1786364591 Fitzpatrick Phillips

Man I wanna play Oneechanbara Z SOOOOO freakin badly. I’m glad its doing well. Maybe, just maybe, it’ll get a PS3 version. Beyond the Labyrinth I would have imported if I had a JP 3DS so I’ve just been playing Heroes Phantasia.

  • Kai Rule

It sold less than PSVITA??? NOOOOOOoooo…

  • s07195

    I’m holding out for the coming of ToI R next week… or I might not get it at all. ;_;
*gets hammer ready and holds above piggy bank with Chinese New Year red packet money*

  • theworldofnoboundries

While i am really happy on 3DS taking over the chart, i am quite sad that there are no Vita game at all on the chart. I really hopes that when it comes to U.S, Vita will be able to sell some and boost their sales so that at least 3DS will have some competitor and allowed both Nintendo and Sony to keep growing.
