<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week, Arc System Works released BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma for the PlayStation 3. The game sold over 72,000 copies in its first week, debuting at the #3 spot on the top-20 software sales chart. Here’s how that compares to previous first-week sales in the series:

(2009) BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger - 33,768 (PS3) | 24,812 (360)

(2010) BlazBlue: Continuum Shift - 49,871 (PS3)

(2011) BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend - 32,992 (PS3) | 4,766 (360)

As you can see, BlazBlue has grown over the past few years, but hasn’t really broken out of its niche quite yet.

Also released last week was Konami’s PowerPros Baseball 2013 on all three PlayStation platforms. Finally, Sega released Sonic Lost World, which sold an underwhelming 5,000 copies on 3DS. Meanwhile, the Wii U version of the game didn’t chart at all.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

I have to ask, why do you not cover the other platform’s hardware sales? It’s public information, and only helps build a vision of how the Japanese market is. It seems you’re picking and choosing based on platform age, which is silly.

Additionally, SEGA released Sonic: Lost World on Wii U as well. It didn’t chart, once again demonstrating the monster that is the Wii U.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Next weeks sales will be interesting

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Partly because, honestly, I don’t want the sales column to turn into every other place on the Internet where console warriors argue over hardware sales. The focus is and always should be on software. Go look at other sites—you’ll find no shortage of people bickering about hardware sales and features and complaining about how their favourite platform is doing.

We list hardware sales of recent platforms as bonus information, but I don’t ever intend for them to be the focus of the sales column discussions.

(Also, yeah, I completely missed that the Wii U version of SLW was out last week as well. Fixed! Yeesh, Wii U…)

      • Lester Rat

That is good because the purpose of sales charts should not be taken as a competition, like many people do. And the hardware part is the least important for people in general.

It is important to see how games are selling to see if the companies who make them are having a return, and it may be an indication if we will see more of those games we like or not.

About the hardware, it is not important, because for people, it doesn’t matter if the console sells more or less, as long as it receives software that appeals the owners.

Some forums have some deplorable “artificial” competitions just for people say “lol Sony” or “lol Nintendo”. I am glad that we are trying to avoid that here since the purpose of Siliconera is to provide information/news.

    • John Diamond

it’s still a shame about the wii-u sales.
i mean i really don’t understand why it should be selling this badly.

  • TheExile285

    Good for BB!

  • Twilleppac

*looks at Extend’s Xbox sales* … and they wondered why Chronophantasma isn’t getting an xbox release? There’s your answer.

    • Vesperion

In Japan? Yeah we already knew , but the U.S is a different story

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

By that token, nothing made in Japan should ever be released on Xbox… which is an utterly silly notion, because that’s the leading platform in the U.S., which is potentially the biggest market for these games.

      • ARMs7777

I read that xbox live has less than 15k characters played online. There were 19 characters and some players must have played more than 1 character.online at one point or another.

I dunno if that 15k number includes other countries, but its from the american xbox leaderboard.

  • Pdugna

Nice on Blazblue sales looks like a 100% increase maybe more, from the last game. Also looked at Danganronpa sales it seems it they went up slightly :D

  • Herok♞

Yes maybe by the next game Blazblue will be considered mainstream

    • RichyGaming

      That’d make me so happy

  • Shinobikens

Still waiting for the BB Collector’s Edition to go up on Amazon…I may die before it does

  • z_merquise

Even if Blazblue series is a niche, 70k for just the first week is pretty impressive especially that the previous iteration was just 30k. Looks like it’s really getting more and more attention as years goes by.

I wonder how Guilty Gear series would fare when Xrd is released from the consoles.

    • Suzaku

Xrd actually might do pretty well. It’s getting some added press for being an early PS4 title, and its graphics have drawn quite a bit of attention. The buzz for Xrd is certainly beyond what we saw with the various iterations of GGX and XX, and the series’ cult status has only grown.

  • Bell

While this is certainly good news, I believe that BB deserves so much more recognition. So much more…

    • The Watcher

it’s not as popular as street fighter. It’s going to take a few more years but i have a feeling once CP comes to the west next year it will be just as successful. My only concern is that USF4 comes a week later. As long as BBCP comes out first then everything should be alright.

      • Go2hell66

        Bbcp as popular as sf4!?

        Keep on dreamin..

  • Arcana Wiz

Great! i know that isnt much, but it’s almost a 100% grow compared to the last title, and this game seems to be the best in battle mechanincs…i hope that the next game that isnt a extend we reach the 130-150k in te first week!

  • epy

    Sonic… =(

    • Anime10121

I think changing the formula was not such a good idea. This Sonic never did have me excited to play it like Generations, Colors, or even Unleashed (crappy werehog stages and all) before it. They slowed down Sonic to make him play more like Mario (at least from what I’ve heard)… I’m still gonna get it, just waiting on that SuperSonic price drop that usually happens faster than Sonic runs…

      • British_Otaku

Sonic can still move quickly through environments and often with much more meaning than holding a boost button and tapping dodge buttons in Lost World. He may be slower, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem for the game.

I’m more fond of open environment/interaction over rollercoaster rides if that makes sense, so maybe I have a different view just because.

        • Anime10121

I am too generally, as long as it works (which I’ll reserve judgement on that until I actually play it). I’m just saying that this is probably the general reason it’s sales dropped so fiercely. Sega finally got the design nearly down to a science with Generations, and to abruptly change it…

But something just aint sitting right with Lost Worlds for me though, and thats coming from someone who found (though I had to look REALLY hard) fun in Sonic 06… I’ll still get it, I’m just waiting a month or two for that Sonic price drop!

I figured the 3DS version would flop, as I figured many liked the contrast between the console/handheld 3D/2D entries but the Wii U version doing as bad as it is….was unexpected to say the least.

          • British_Otaku

I see. Given Lost World a try when you can, it’s got some problems but how fast you move isn’t really one of them, even falling off platforms is unlikely due to how the parkour system can get you out of a pinch rather than necessary walls even if it is a little slippery. During a playthrough of the 3DS demo, I trailed the side of a floating platform, then scaled upwards from the back to a platform I should be accessing another way.

I got the feeling that the 3DS one would suffer from being forgotten as promotion is always more focused on the console installments in cases like this. I would like to think it’s the platform choice that made console Lost World sell less well, but below 4,602 in the first week reminds me of Yakuza 1 + 2 HD which also didn’t even chart on the Wii U (http://www.destructoid.com/yakuza-1-2-hd-sells-very-poorly-in-its-first-week-260081.phtml ).

  • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

“enjoy your future! it’s gonna be great”

i grew up with sonic and megaman, it’s sad to see what is happening to these two franchises lately…

edit: You guys will wish for a BlazBlue Judgment after finishing the story mode of CP :p

    • Crimson_Cloud

      Ugh, whenever I see Megaman I get an empty feeling inside. I really need another X game. Even a remake would do… ;_;

    • British_Otaku

Eh, Sonic’s doing perfectly fine in comparison to Megaman or most 90s video game franchises, some rough bumps with Japanese sales when it does best in other regions or poor review reception when that it’s been the standard for that it happen since the Genesis era… >_>

      BlazBlue Judgment?

      • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

my concern towards how the sonic franchise is not really that good lately.

Guilty Gear Judgment is a 2d beat em up spin odd made by ArcSys for the psp. I can’t say anything more than that because of huge spoiler

        • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Sonic Generations, Sonic Colors…your comment is invalid.

          • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

I only liked Generations. and no, my comment isn’t invalid because is my opinion

  • Altin

Nice to see more Vita games on that chart. Most likely, those will increase once the Vita TV is going to get released too :D

  • Mirai

You’ve seemed to made a mistake with Blazblue as you first claim it to have sold 84,000 copies, then on the charts it says 72,464 copies sold. Which would mean Dangan Ronpa surpassed BB’s first week sales which is pretty impressive considering its on the Vita as well as being only an updated version of the previous games.

    • Arcana Wiz

EDIT, ops i thinked that i was in the OT:P
and famitsu reported that was 84k.

      • Arcana Wiz

sorryyyy already edited, i replied thinking that we were in the open thread.

      • Mirai

Oh, okay then so 84k is the correct answer. If that’s so why would there be a 12k difference between the two as that’s quite a few missed out.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Whoops, fixed! Also, comparing Danganronpa to BlazBlue is apples to oranges. The two are nothing alike, and the market has a much higher resistance to fighting games unless they’re based on a popular license (like Persona 4: Arena, for instance).

  • Yan Zhao

lol Samurai Warriors 2 HD only sold 6900. I still dont get the point of re-releasing that. Was it actually a high demand title of theirs? Numbers sure dont show it.

  • Aristides

Woa, lots of PSP games this time around. Girls sure love their otome =)

  • Göran Isacson

Aw man, Sonic… and here I thought they were starting to climb after Generations. Wonder if only being on Nintendo platforms hurt their prospects, or if it’s something in the game…

Also, ow Beyond. From 7 to 20 is quite the dip… will we be seeing a playtest of that soon here on Siliconera?

Good on ArcSys though for growing. It may be by baby-steps, but it’s growing nonetheless.
