Last week in Japan, it was a huge week in video game sales as it featured the anticipated releases of a couple blockbuster titles in Kingdom Hearts III and Resident Evil 2. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of January 21 to January 27, 2019.

The #1 crown of the week goes to Kingdom Hearts III which sold a whopping 610,077 units on PlayStation 4 for its debut. Below are the first week sales numbers of other entries as well as the remix titles in Japan:

  • (2009) Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days – 295,205 [DS]
  • (2010) Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep – 445,962 [PSP]
  • (2012) Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance – 213,579 [3DS]
  • (2013) Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix – 128,414 [PS3]
  • (2014) Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix – 84.935 [PS3]
  • (2017) Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue – 137,797 [PS4]
  • (2017) Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix – 62,770 [PS4]
  • (2019) Kingdom Hearts III – 610,077 [PS4]

Since the first two games released in 2002 and 2005 we can’t make any proper comparisons to their debuts, but as you can see, Kingdom Hearts III had an excellent debut in Japan.

Next up, we have Resident Evil 2’s remake which also had a big debut, charting at #2 with 252,848 units sold on PS4. Below is how it compares to the Japanese debuts of previous main-numbered Resident Evil releases:

  • (2009) Resident Evil 5 – 398,747 [319,590-PS3|79,157-Xbox 360]
  • (2012) Resident Evil 6 – 676,485 [634,933-PS3|41,652-Xbox 360]
  • (2017) Resident Evil 7 – 187,306 [PS4]
  • (2019) Resident Evil 2 – 252,848 [PS4]

It didn’t sell as much as the previous generation’s Resident Evil games, it made a good push from the previous release in Resident Evil 7: biohazard.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe was at #3 with 57,725 units sold on Switch, followed by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at #4 with 38,478 units sold on Switch, and last week’s top dog Ace Combat 7 at #5 with 25,499 units sold on PS4. We also had one more new release with Higurashi When They Cry Hou for PS4 at #20 with 2,868 copies sold.

In hardware sales, the PS4 sold 19,612 units and an additional 33,032 units of PS4 Pro consoles to combine for a total of 52,644 units to outsell the Switch for what feels like the first time since the launch of the console almost two years ago thanks to the power of Kingdom Hearts III and Resident Evil 2. However, the Nintendo Switch was still the best-selling single console with 52,429 units sold to make up 46.9% of all hardware sales.
