Tekken 7 Has Shipped 5 Million Units; Seeing Great Viewership

Tekken 7 has shipped 5 million units globally as of the end of 2019, according to producer Katsuhiro Harada. The game has managed this two-and-a-half years after its release on consoles and PC in mid-2017.

This makes Tekken 7 one of the better-selling fighting games from a Japanese developer this console generation. Its closest competitor, Street Fighter V, was released in early 2016 and Capcom announced today that it has moved 4.1 million units since.

Tekken has also been doing remarkably well in terms of viewership numbers at the annual EVO Championship Series tournament, which you can see in the charts we’ve compiled below.

These charts represent the number of viewers for both Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 on the main EVO streams on Twitch.tv over the last few years. We’ve compiled them using stats meticulously tracked by Reddit user Starfirefeet, who shares them with the community each year.

While they don’t account for mirrored streams hosted by other sites or Twitch channels, the counts do demonstrate that Tekken 7 is incredibly competitive in terms of viewership. It actually out-performed Street Fighter V on the EVO stream in 2019, and was the capper to the event that year.

In fact, even during its best year in 2018—when popular streamer Ninja served as guest host for part of its finals—Street Fighter V’s total viewership numbers fell well short of Tekken 7’s 2019 count. Again, while these figures don’t account for every stream that is running during EVO, it does give one a sense of how both games are doing relative to one another.

Tekken 7 will return to EVO once again this year, alongside Street Fighter V and a number of its other contemporaries. It should be interesting to see how the game holds up in viewership counts.
