Nintendo sponsoring indie games in TGS 2018-2021

Nintendo’s TGS 2021 Presence Is Only to Help Indie Booths

Nintendo has posted some clarification regarding its appearance at Tokyo Game Show 2021 on Twitter. It will not have its own booth nor reveal new games directly at the event. Nintendo noted that its appearance in TGS 2021 is only intended to support indie game booths.

Here’s our translation of the Japanese tweet from Nintendo’s official account:

Regarding Tokyo Game Show 2021 which will be held from September 30, 2021, Nintendo will not [set up] a booth nor exhibit game titles. We will only support exhibits of other companies’ indie games. People considering to attend the aforementioned event are advised not to make a mistake.

The TGS 2021 exhibitor list does include Nintendo, but it is listed with the BtoB (business-to-business) tag. While Nintendo did set up a booth at TGS 2001 Spring, it rarely appears directly at the Tokyo Game Show as it prefers to announce games through its own broadcasts like Nintendo Direct. However, since 2018, the company has appeared at the event to sponsor indie game booths.

Similarly, Sony Interactive Entertainment is also listed only as a BtoB participant. It will hold its own PlayStation Showcase on September 9, 2021, where it will exclusively reveal more details on upcoming PS5 games.

The 2021 Tokyo Game Show will take place from September 30, 2021, to October 3, 2021.
