Ryza can also use her hands to gather items, but gathering items from areas without using a tool won’t provide certain benefits. It’s suggested to always use a tool over your hands if possible, since you want to maximize the amount and the quality of items when gathering. Thankfully, Atelier Ryza 2’s gathering system will actually show you what items you can obtain from specific gathering points. This makes gathering a lot easier and much more manageable when trying to locate specific materials, circumventing some of the randomness. Additionally, pulling up your radial menu will allow you to check which gathering tool is best for whatever material you’re trying to harvest.

Naturally, upgrading your tools will be one of your first priorities in Atelier Ryza 2. In order to upgrade your tools, you will first need to unlock the recipe through the Skill Tree. Once you’ve unlocked the recipes for these higher level tools, you can then use the Synthesis feature to create them. Basically, it’s all about synthesizing to create the materials you need after you’ve unlocked the recipe through the skill tree. These effects will be locked off at first, but can be unlocked through synthesizing with essences and certain materials. You’ll easily be able to tell what items you’ll need since it will be designated by color of the material or essence. This opens up the ability to increase the quality of the items you’re gathering, along with other beneficial effects. It might look overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be churning out recipes and harvesting better quality items like a pro.
