Qurupeco could be annoying enough in Monster Hunter Tri, but he has a new crimson sub-species in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Capcom posted a profile of the Crimson Qurupeco this week, along with screenshots of the bird.

Official name: Crimson Qurupeco

Type: Bird Wyvern

The first time someone plays a Monster Hunter game, there’s always that one monster in the beginning that challenges everything you’ve learned so far (and more); sometimes it even teaches you some new tricks – the hard way. In Monster Hunter Tri, for most people this was the Qurupeco – and maybe that will be the case for those starting on Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate as well. Either way, once you get to High Rank quests, you’ll come across the Crimson Qurupeco. On the surface, it looks just like the regular Qurupeco with some color variation. But appearances can be deceiving…

You will instantly recognize Crimson Qurupeco’s physique and movement, since it is almost identical to the regular Qurupeco, but one key thing you should know is that all of its fire-based attacks are now replaced with thunder element. This small tweak will not only require you to reevaluate your armor choice, but might also change the entire pace of the battle – and it adds new moves!

While Qurupeco’s flint stone attacks can set hunters on fire (which slowly drains your red health, followed by the regular health bar), Crimson Qurupeco’s flint attacks will give you a strong electric jolt, causing some thunderblight. This elemental effect will increase the likelihood that you will be stunned (dizzy) in subsequent hits. You don’t want that to happen… but then again, another of Crimson Qurupeco’s moves is to clap its flints together causing a really strong flash of light which can stun anyone in the vicinity.

All that said, the biggest challenge with hunting a Crimson (or regular) Qurupeco is that it can call for help at any given time. You see, one of its main traits is its ability to mimic other monsters’ calls. So every time you set out to hunt a Qurupeco, be prepared to fight any other monster, including the fearsome Deviljho!

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will be released in North America on March 19th and in Europe on March 22nd for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
