Dragon Quest X On Nintendo 3DS Sold Through 95% Of Its Shipment

On September 4th, Square Enix released the Nintendo 3DS version of Dragon Quest X in Japan, and the game sold 52,375 copies in its first week. That doesn’t sound like a whole lot, but one needs to keep three things in mind:

a) Dragon Quest X is an MMORPG and is already available on PC, Wii and Wii U.

b) The 3DS version isn’t a port. It requires you to cloud-stream the entire game.

c) The 3DS version requires a separate subscription from the other three.

Given all of the aforementioned obstacles in its way, 52,000 is a rather impressive figure. Furthermore, Japanese sales tracker Media Create reveals that the game sold through 95.53% of its shipment, which means the game was sold out at most stores and did better than Square Enix expected it to.

Unfortunately, the Nintendo 3DS version of Dragon Quest X also suffers from a number of problems and Square Enix halted shipments of the game after their initial batch while they sort things out. This means that sales are going to drop like a rock during DQX’s second week.

It’s quite the lost opportunity, as the 3DS version could easily have gone on to sell 100,000 copies a few weeks down the line, and had even half those buyers turned into paying subscribers, it would have been quite the achievement.
