On March 31, 2022, it seemed as though a special website appeared to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Metal Gear series. However, it did not feature any kinds of clues or hints about what could be announced regarding any game or merchandise related announcements. However, later on April 1, 2022 it was revealed to be an April Fools’ Day joke from an unrelated entity. Upon its reveal, it suggested it would be a site promoting Metal Gear series NFTs. Each one featured Dr. Hal “Otacon” Emmerich sprites. A Konami spokesperson told GamesRadar it had no ties to the company.
It’s been a while since Konami made any significant Metal Gear announcements about any potential game releases or re-releases. In November 2021, certain entries in the Metal Gear Solid series were removed from digital storefronts. Among them were the digital versions of Metal Gear Solid HD, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Metal Gear Solid 3. This was a result of Konami needing to renew the license due to specific footage that appeared within those titles.
However, in December 2020 it was announced a Metal Gear Solid movie is in development. Oscar Isaac (Star Wars, Moon Knight) is set to star as Solid Snake. Other names attached to the film include script writer Derek Connolly (Kong: Skull Island, Jurassic World) and producer Avi Arad (Iron Man, Uncharted). However, outside of Isaac previously confirming that the film is still in production, any significant news on it has yet to be released.
