<< How to read and understand sales

Oh, Dark Souls, what a long way you’ve come. Back when the Souls franchise first debuted in the form of Demon’s Souls back in 2009, the game sold a mere 39,689 copies in its first week on store shelves on PlayStation 3.

Cut to five years later, and Dark Souls II has sold a combined total of 261,147 copies between its PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions (this is the first multiplatform Souls game in Japan). It sold 255,197 copies on PS3 and another 5,950 copies on the 360.

Dark Souls II’s opening week sales fell just short of the opening sales of its predecessor, Dark Souls, which was released in 2011. That game sold 279,567 copies at launch, which puts it slightly higher than Dark Souls II. With that said, these are still very, very respectable figures for Dark Souls II’s debut.
