Leading up to The King of Fighters XV debut, SNK published short backstories for teams on an official website. The first one for October 2021 explains something of a mystery. The KOF XV Team Orochi backstory not only explains why Chris, Shermie, and Yashiro are competing, but offers a brief explanation for why theyāre suddenly back.

At the end of KOF 97, Chris, Shermie, and Yashiro took part in the tournament to resurrect Orochi. This led to the three dying in the process. The KOF XV backstory for the trio reveals that the three were in a dark space. That is, until they were ripped from it by hands. The three discuss what happened and how they will take advantage of it. After seeing Shunāeiās image in a magazine, the group decides to do more at the next tournament. Though there is also some talk of getting the band back together.

KOF XV will appear on February 17, 2022 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
